June t8th to a large crowd and for 39 excited Grade 8 graduates. Father Tony Del Ciancio celebrated the Mass and wished these students success and happiness in the future. Congratulations to all the students winning awards and to all the graduates. A delicious supper was catered. These members of the St. Columban -men's- soccer team were out working at the site that day. WATERMAN PHOTO Local Heroes Prograni aids St. Columban soccer clubhouse - BY LEE ANN WATERMAN Advocate Staff Volunteers are working hard to make improvements to the Soccer clubhouse in St. Columban. Thanks to a $1,5(0 donation from Molson Breweries Local Heroes program and the -effort of volunteers, the clpbhousc will'have plumbing, electricity and a referee's locker room. Brian Melady. a member'of the St. Columban's men "s soccer team. applied to Molsonts for the grant which was created to help people improve adult recreation and fitness facilities in• their communities: - The Local Heroes program funds a portion ol the hard costs (anywherefrom 5250 to $5.0001 associated with the project and people in the community are responsible for coordinating the project and supplying the people power. To be eligible. -projects must he free and accessibre to the entire community. ' "The money is given to. individuals who want, to improve their community in some way': explains Patrick - • Waters, a consumer sales representative _with Molson's. The soccer field and facilities are an important part of the community. Teams with players aged five to 33 from towns across Perth and Huron Counties. including Mitchell. Seaforth. Dublin and . Si. "No better time exists than ,mid-September. for farmers to get away for a couplcdays: visit the International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show and take in the Machines in Motion equipment demonstrations. On our site - located adjacent t� the east side of tented city - we've dedicated 192 acres to 4 crops that. will be harvested. tilled. and re -seeded during. - the five-day event. It'll be a busy but very educational time and our committee is gearing up .for large numbers of both farmers and exhihi'tors. We intend to provide an opportunity to sec the very latest agricultural technology operating in its own environment." However, -all eyes will not just be on the future at the Machines -in Motion site: Committee members 'have decided to use IPM '99 -as an opportunity to re -cap a century of agriculture in Huron. one of Ontario's foremost agricultural, producing counties. "Our committee has chosen to visit the years 1919 and 1'959. -as well as 1999. and are working in' co-operation with the Antique Equipment Committee to actively demonstrate farm implements from these eras: harvesting.'. tilling and seeding adjacent to 4he most modern equipment assailable. It seemed only right to close out a century of farming with 'an active tribute to those .who have made Huron County thd dynamic farming industry that it is today" states Becker. 'This aspect of our Machines in Motion - display •is unique to the IPM • and promises to he of interest to all generations.- Machines- .in Motion committee members have taken their "Back to the Future" theme several steps further and are urging . equipment manufacturers •and other exhibitors in the .tented city to include some aspect of their own history in their exhibits. showing visitors the 'tremendous advances that have been made in agricultural technology in the 20th Century. Plans are also in the making to invite elementary and secondary students to participate in a "Back to • the Future" competition: depicting their vision of • agriculture in the year 2049.
