County asks police for figures to police all of Huron BY BLAKE PATTERSON Signal -Star Staff Huron County has asked the Ontario Provincial Police to consider patrolling the entire county. but Wingham wants no pan of it. According to Wingham Police Chief Jim Dore, the OPP should not he given a monopoly in Huron because competition is needed to ensure fair pricing from the provincial force. Without alternative policing choices. such as the Wingham Police Service, Dore said the county risks placing itself at the pricing whims of the OPP. The OPP already provides protection to all Huron County municipalities except Wingham. As such, the Wingham Police Service wants to increase its patrol area and provide an alternative. The Townships of Morris and Howick and .the Villages of Brussels and Bluth have already said they are in favour of joining the Wingham service. Grey Township has also expressed interest. If the Wingham Police Service is disbanded in favour of the OPP, Dore said Huron County policing costs could rise to $370 per household -- as it has in other parts of the province. Wingham. he said. will provide the service for S190 per household. "We're still enough of a threat to keep prices fair." said Dore. "Anti business person knows the only way to maintain fair and consistent pricing in the market is through competition." Dore went on to say the province's solicitor general's office has confirmed the Wingham Police Service will have no problem meeting the police protection adequacy standards currently being debated by the provincial government. Dore attended the ,count council meeting to address rumours the county intends to force the Wingham Police Services to disband in an attempt to drive a hetter deal for county -wide policing from the OPP. Dore wanted assurance that will not happen. The council thanked Dore for his presentation.
