"When we were setting up, there were people looking in our stuff," said Trish MacGregor who planned to start selling at 7 a.m. Jennifer Kennington, MacGregor's friend from Toronto, also took part in the sale and said some people started driving by early, looking over the tables. That was a sign of a serious yard saler, looking for specific types of treasures that might not have been found among the children's toys and clothes that made up part of their sale. Kennington said one person stopped by looking for 19th century pottery. While there wasn't that kind of treasure at MacGregor and Kennington's sale, Jessica Laycox, three, found some treasure of her own at one of the toy tables. Her mom, Teresa, said they were just out for a stroll and took the opportunity to stop at some of the sales. While she does head for some of the yard sales, she said they aren't too serious about it. Saturday, they found a few odds and ends they could use. "We just see what's out. If we need it, we just go get it," she said. While it's a chance for some people to pick up some items they can use, it was a chance for MacGregor and Kennington to sell some of the things they no longer needed. MacGregor said she had a box of odds and ends started for quite some time; some of the extras and duplicates that had built since getting BY SCOTT HILGENDORFF Expositor Editor It can be competitive to get to the big ones first. It can be frustrating to passing motorists. It can be a way to make more cash, to make more room or to find something to fill a room. It can also be a treasure hunt. "There's some really fabulous finds," said Gene Baynham of Nixon's Hill in Seaforth who found herself drawn to the tables in front of homes across the community. She found some cornflower glass that matched a collection she inherited from her mother during Saturday's town -wide yard sale. The glass didn't mean anything to its owner anymore but Baynham had a connection to the antique glass that is no longer produced. She went into town for a bag of potatoes but couldn't resist stopping at a few of the many yard sales that were held. She said anyone who knows her, knows she loves auctions and garage sales but Saturday, she hadn't planned on engaging in the sport. Nor did she expect to find the cornflower glass. "That was a real find," said Baynham. And she didn't start out early like most serious yard salers. Don Corbett, who had the sale where Baynham found the glass, started putting their items out at 6 a.m. and by quarter after, said his first customers had come by. "Officially, it wasn't open until 8 o'clock," he said. Northside hoping to build parking lot Northside United Church hopes to install'a parkiiig'liit. Marlen Vincent submitted the proposal to Seaforth Council just prior to its meeting last Tuesday. Clerk/administrator Jim Crocker said he would digest the document, and any relevant parking and zoning requirements for the corner of. Goderich Street West and Church Streets, then prepare a report for council's next meeting. Northside wants to build a lot to the east and north sides of the church, with an entrance off Highway 8 (Goderich Street) and exit onto Church. The proposal would require changing the parallel parking on the east side of Church Street to angle parking. The Ndrt side'proposal also notes it would require a tree being removed in the boulevard to accommodate the entrance, water control on the lot done by grading plan (no catch basins to tie into), a curb cut on the highway of about 25 feet, and the sidewalk (new) may have to be lowered to maintain drainage. "By changing the east side of Church Street to angle parking from parallel, it would gain two to three parking spaces but cars would be parking over top of the sidewalk," according to proposal submitted by Vincent. "This would also require signs and maybe paint." 4 DAYS ONLY ONKYO SHOW & SALE SPECIAL EVENT THURSDAY FROM 4 UNTIL 6 MEET ONKYO DISTRIBUTOR TONY GRAY JOIN IN THE WORLD LAUNCH OF HIS EXCEPTIONAL NEW LOUDSPEAKER THE $3,300 ANGSTROM OBUOATO FACTORY AUTHORIZED ONKYO SALE ENDS SATURDAY RECEIVERS, DOLBY DIGITAL, CDS, CASSETTES NEW MODELS, CLEARAhreES, TERMS 263 Huron Rd. Deputy clerk Cathy Garrick told council last Tuesday that the owner of the building has agreed to the idea and a downtown merchant has donated paint for the project. Cathy Elliott and Cathy Pletsch make up the LACAC subcommittee co- ordinating the project. Garrick reported the committee is thinking of a picture of the original storefront, maybe with Seaforth people in the scene. She said the committee is looking for a local artist to paint it, perhaps in the $500 to $900 range. Councillors agreed the concept would "clean up the corner." Kennington said it was also a good way to motivate her son to get rid of some of his toys. By getting rid of some of the little things, she had told him he could get something bigger instead with the proceeds. Cathy Garrick, deputy clerk, said this year's sales were about normal compared to others. There have been about four town -wide yard sales. Thirty people registered yard sales one of the many sales held HILGENDORFF PHOTO at the town hall in exchange for having them listed on a map available to the public. Garrick said there were many more sales that didn't register to be on the map and that people from across the region arc drawn to the town for the event. "We get calls every year," she said. Some from people ahead of time wanting to know when the sale is being held to plan to have that weekend free. "We had phone calls from all over the place," she'said.
