HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1998-05-27, Page 7Walton by Patty Banks $87-6156 , Minor hockey holding registration earlier now Seaforth and District Minor Hockey Association is hold- ing registration for next sea- son on June 17 and June 18, both nights from 7 to 9 p.m. at the arena. Registration has to be done early so minor hockey knows the number of teams it will be dealing with for ice time and league regis- tration next year. Parents will be asked to bring two post-dated cheques for the registration fees. One of them is to be dated September 1 and the other November 1, 1998. All players will have the option to play on just travel teams, just house league or both. Minor Hockey will also be selling $50 fundraiser draw tickets for a chance to win $10,000. The Seaforth recreation department will be offering conditioning basketball and computer camps beginning in July, as well as tennis lessons all beginning in July. Please watch for more details or call the recreation office. The Seaforth Co -Operative Children's Centre invites everyone to Victoria Park this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. to help them celebrate their 20th anniversary. It include s the parrot show from African Lion safari, local entertain- ment, vendors and food. For more information please call 527-0682 or 527-1401. Seaforth's giant community yard sale is a week Saturday, on, June 6. Check the bul- letin board beside the T -D Bank for the locations of yard sales during the day. Downtown Seaforth is also hosting sidewalk sales from June 3 to lune 6. !n addition, that Saturday the Van Egmond Foundation will be hosting a springfling craft show at the Van Egmond House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m 'Recreation Preview by Marty Bedard and again that Sunday. Admission fee is $1. Senior shuffleboard contin- ues every Wednesday after- noon at the Seaforth and. District Community Centres starting at 1:30 p.m.. Last week's winners were: Ladies - Audrey McLean - 339, Jean Keys - 248 and Beth Pryce - 222 Men - Bruce McLean - 232 and Earl McNaughton - 199. Please note that there will be no shuffleboard today due to the Egmondville Church barbeque. Seaforth Lions Pool is offering summer swimming lessons in three sessions again this year - July 6 to July 17, July 20 to July 31 and Aug. 10 to Aug. 21 - with registration for all lessons on Saturday June 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Li off* Park 'pavilion. Kids amazed by `Kane' The week at Walton Public School began with Kyle Griffith's uncle, Officer Allan Dickson and his dog. Kane, from the Kitchener/Waterloo Canine Unit, giving demon- strations on what his dog can, do. Kanc is from the Czech Republic and has been with the officer for 3 years now. They both had to go into training together for 15 weeks. The kids were amazed as the dog would sniff out and find certain objects that the officer would throw out into the field. With the dog on his leash Officer Dickson showed how the dog was trained to attack on com- mand. After the demonstra- tions the officer answered all of the kids' questions. Then it was time for "Kids on the Block" puppet show. The program is sponsored by the Huron County Community Child Abuse Coordinating Committee, and fully sponsored by the Boards of Education and the Children's Aid Society of Huron County. The program is intended to provide chil- dren with the information they need to help keep them safe. It provides a non-thrcat- ening approach to the issue of child abuse and provides very positive, supportive messages to children. Friday was track and field day with helpers Geoff Banks, Patty Querengesser, Gerrid Dalton, Sarah Williamson and Shane McClure, all Grade 7 stu- dents from Seaforth Public School (previous graduates from Walton). Children going on to the Seaforth regional track and field meet on the 28th are Steven McNichol, Adam McClure, Grcg Bowers, Mitch Blake, Shayne Cochranc, Blake Miller, Chris Holmes, Kevin Hood, Claire Mastnak, Crystal Gibbons, Katie Williamson, Andrea VanderVeen, Laura Elligsen, Marcie McClure. The last game of euchre until Oct. was played last week at the Walton Hall. The first place winners were dartie and Boyd; second 4 place winners went to Alvin and Vera McDonald with George and Gloria Love tak- ing third place. Men's lone hand winner was G. Hoegy and Eileen Wickic took home the woman's lone hand prize. Sarah and Andrew McDonald were greeters at Duff's United Church May 24th. With Rev. Murray away at conference, Helen and Graeme Craig took charge of the service. Scripture was read by Monique Baan and Doreen Hackwell. The UCW meeting will be Wed. June 3rd at 8:00 and the roll call will be one dozen cookies for Camp Menesetung. Please no peanut butter or anything with nuts in them. Cassandra Banks and Crystal Gibbons sang a duet called "To Show by Touch and Word". Graeme gave the message which was called "The Other Barney". Most recently he has coached triple A midget in Huron. Before that he coached midget in Seaforth's minor hockey system. Gingerich is the Bulls' 14th head coach in their 16 sea- sons. The team has not won a playoff game in its last 16 tries. Residents plant garden Queensway residents had a great time Friday morning planting a vegetable garden in special wheelchair level planters. We hope to harvest tomatoes, radishes, lettuce and green onions. Discussion took place about the difference between store bought tomatoes and real, homegrown tomatoes as well as fresh green onions added to salads. Residents are look- ing forward to providing daily attention to our garden. Nancy Fraser of the Mensal! United Church led Worship Service Tuesday afternoon with Marg Cole assisting res- idents. Winnie Hutton, pastoral care volunteer led Bible Study Wednesday afternoon for her study group. Others benefited from a quiz and card game in Retirement Queensway Home Lounge. Thursday found us trying out our new breadmaker. A few of the ladies could not believe how things have changed and it didn't surprise them when our first attempt turned out a little heavy. But, we will persevere and hope- fully our next loaf will be more edible. We are looking forward to the Volunteer Appreciation Party Wednesday, May 27 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Max and The Town Liners will entertain at the May birthday party, May 28th, 7 p.m. All community seniors are welcome to join us.
