During this period. Ken Doig Sr. spent much of his time living in Scotland where he was play- ing professional hockey. Golf became a passion for him while in Scotland and this proved to change the direc- tion of golf in Seaforth. In the 1950s. while on a visit home, Ken introduced his younger brother, Rod, to the game.of golf. At the time the two visited courses in Mitchell and Goderich and after taking up the game Rod became just as hooked on the sport as his brother. Over thc next years and after Ken had returned from Scotland with his young family, the two Doig hrothers discussed the prospect of building a course on the family farm in Tuckersmith. In 1959 they set to work with plough and bulldozer and in 1960 the golf course was on its way. By early 1961 golfers were meander-. ing around the fledgling course, still rock strewn. hare in spots, and -lacking many of the facilities thc course now features. Operating out of the old farm house which was built in 1856 from field stones, the course grew in popularity. in 1967. Canada's Centennial year. the old- Karn was dis- mantled and rebuilt into the present chalet -style club- house. In 1984 the course expanded from nine holes to 1.3 with the addition of four new. holes. This proved to he a unique layout and the cause of much interest when tour- naments. course ratings, and The Tartan Chameleon Golf Notes by C.A. Doig even Just -for -fun rounds were played. In 1989 the course became a full 18 -hole facility and it's interesting to hear the long time members discuss their round by saying things like, "The old number one," and "The little par three -- number five." We can always tell someone who has been a member for years by the way they number the holes. - Building the golf course was not without its chal- lenges. There were so many stones that the stone picking seemed to go on forever. Not only that, hut the frost brought the stones up every spring just as if they were planted! There was no irriga- tion system but pipes were laid in the ground as Paul Doig, Ken and Rod's father, walked behind a hand plough and produced a furrow for thc pipes to water the original greens and tees. The proshop was basically a case of Shop, a box of chocolate Kars, some tees and halls, sitting on. the front lawn under the maple trees. The honour system.was used and golfers were expect- ed to put their dollar green fee into the tin can before play. The top line hall at the time was a Spalding Dot and its cost was $1 plus five cents tax! Old Yellar, the farm dog, slept under the trees hut since he couldn't count it was up to the player to tally'the costs. We are now into our second gen- eration of golfers as people like Kevin Bennett, John Wilson, Brian and Al Nigh, and many more hring their youngsters out to enjoy golf where. they spent most Of their summer days years ago. Many changes and improvements have taken place in 38 years and this year we expect to continue these improvements. However. it's the people that make the course tick and if you want to see the histoty of the course from that perspec- tive check out the trophies on the mantel. They are being updated so that they will pro- vide a record of the people who have enjoyed their moment in, the sun at our club.
