One-week March Break on tap
BY RICK KEW
Advocate Staff
Students in the the Avon
Maitland District School
Board (AMDSB) will have a
one-week March Break n;;xt
year as the board approved its
1998-99 school year calendar'
during its March 3I st. meet-
ing.
School councils within the
AMDSB showed overwhelm-
ing support for a one-week
March break next.year, voting
41-5 in favor of it.
This year, schools in thc
former Perth board had a one-
week hrcak whilc.schools in
the former Huron hoard and
the Huron Perth Catholic dis-
trict school board had two-
week breaks. With.the forma-
tion of the AMDSB, the new
board shares approximately
80 per cent of its bus routes
with the Catholic board
resulting in cost savings to the
existing boards.
Next year, if the two boar1s
had not harmonized the tim-
Tuckersmith
tng and length of the March
break. the costs to run the
buses for an additional week
would be $29,000 stated a
report from AMDSB trans-
portation manager Dennis
Harris.
Addressing trustees at the
March 31st meeting, assistant
superintendent of schools,
Jim Moore. informed the
board the Catholic board
endorsed a school calender
identical to the AMDSB ele-
mentary and secondary calen-
dars.
In the calendar adopted by
trustees for secondary
schools, classes will begin on
Sept. 8 and conclude June 18.
In addition to instructional
days, secondary schools will
schedule 10 examination
days: Jan. 27 to Feb. 02 and
June 21 to June 25. Easter
Monday will be a classroom
day. Four professional devel-
opment days are planned:
Feb. 3 and June 28 to June 30.
For elementary schools the
school year begins Sept. 8
tables mowing tenders
to minutes of the meeting.
Coun. Doug Vock, who
owns a house on the street,
declared a conflict of interest
and refrained from discus-
sion.
No members of the .public
were in attendance for a pub-
lic meeting earlier in the
evening to consider a pro-
posed zoning bylaw amend-
ment that would change the
minimum lot depth for "vil-
lage residential low density
from 46 to 40 metres.

and concludes June 29. Four
professional development
days are listed: one prior to
Labor Day, Nov. 27, Apr. 30
and June 30. Easter Monday
will remain a holiday for ele-
mentary staff.
Because the number of pro-
fessional development days
have been reduced from nine
to four and the Ministry of
Education changes to curricu-
lum and student assessments,
the board requested, in a letter
to the ministry, that it increase
the number of professional
development days for the
1999- 2000 school year.
Result; from school coun-
cils in the AMDSB district
were as follows: Huron
County, 18 out of 29 schools
responded with 16 in favor of
a one-week break; Perth
County. 26 out of 29 respond-
ed with 24 in favor of a one-
week break.

"MAKING SMART CHOICES"
The Ontario Government has promised to deregulate the
electricity industry and give customers a choice of
suppliers, possibly by the year 2000.
Seaforth P.U.C. customersare being contacted by Energy
Marketers requesting the right to act as agents in the
purchasing of electricity at unspecified prices. These brokers
may tell you that you will save a great deal of money in the
future. You should know before signing a contract that these
claims are unsubstantiated. Be aware that these marketers are
NOT associated with our utility in any way and we want to
caution you, our valued customer, to fully understand any
agreement you may be signing.
Seaforth P.U.C. will continue to be your supplier and deliverer
of electricity and will keep you informed concerning electricity
supply to the year 2000 and beyond.
Seaforth P.U.C. has joined ENERconnect, a new buying co-
operative made up of Ontario's publicly owned, non-profit
electric Utilities. ENERconnect will assist your Utility with
power purchasing services in a deregulated electricity
market. This decision is expected to ensure competitive
electricity rates and a secure supply of power for the
residential and commercial customers served by the
Seaforth P.U.C.
What this means for customers Is access to the buying
power of utilities such as Ajax, Belleville, Brampton,
Burlington, Dundas, Guelph, Goderich, Hamilton,
Kingston, Kitchener -Wilmot, North Perth (Listowel),
Markham, Niagara Palls, Peterborough, Seaforth, St.
Mary's, Stratford, St. Thomas, Windsor, West Perth
(Mitchell), and Wingham to name a few.
It will keep our Utility viable and competitive in a
deregulated market.
Deferring your decision regarding your future electricity
supplier is the "smart choice" at this time or contact us to
discuss deregulation in the electricity market place.
