HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1998-04-01, Page 8Big crowd for zone public speaking The Zone CI Public Speaking Contest was held recently at Seaforth Legion, Branch '156 with a capacity crowd in attendance. Zone CI commander, June Pyette opened the meeting with the carrying on of the colours. Sgt. -at -Arms, Gordon DeJong was in charge of the colour party - Mary Becker and Judy Poland. Guest Legion offi- cers were: Donna Champion, District C Youth Education Chairman; Jack Champion, District C Child Video Chairman; Robert Grey, Zone CI Secretary; Bea Uyl, Zone Cl Treasurer and Lan -y Uyl. Lillian Beer, Zone Cl Youth Education Chairman, intro- duced the special guests and the judges for the morning - Eva Brown, Janice Ros.. Shirley Dinsmore and Michael Strickland. Winners in the Grade 7-8 class were: 1st, Luke Van Osch, Lucknow; Melissa Genttncr, Wingham; 3rd, Kristyn Gerth, Goderich. Grade 9-10: 1st, Graham Worsell, Goderich; 2nd, Shawn Talbot, Exeter. Seaforth Legion by Barbara Scott Grade 11 -12 -OAC: 1st, Shannon Scott, Wingham; 2nd, Elizabeth Lutgendorff, Exeter. Lunch was served to the officials by the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 156. In the afternoon the judges were Eva Brown, Marie Mitchell, Shirley Dinsmore and Michael Strickland. Winners in the story telling were: 1st, Kaitlyn Krahn, Exeter; 2nd, Alex Van Dunen, Mitchell; 3rd, Olivia Fischer, Exeter. Grade 4-6: 1st, Megan O'Rourke, Exeter; 2nd, Luke Van Bakel, Seaforth; 3rd, Justin Boucher, Kincardine. The first place winners will now advance to the District level in Harriston next Sunday. Altogether 38•students took part in this contest, represent- ing the 13 branches in Zone Cl. The quality of the speeches was outstanding, PUBLIC SPEAKING PROWESS was in evidence at the Legion Zone CI Public Speaking Contest held at Seaforth Branch 156 on March 29. Submitted photo. making the job of the judges very difficult. All the contes- tants were to be congratulat- ed for the splendid effort they put into this event. Each con- testant received a certificate and a prize. The first, second and third place winners received a certificate and a cheque. The judges were presented with a gift by Zone Commander June Pyette and Zone Youth Education Chairman Lillian Beer. Tickets are still available for the fish fry on April 18. Horse races, meat draws and karaoke will also be held that day. The duck race tickets are also available at the branch. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. Brunch and oatmeal cookies don't last long • Vicki Dalrymple cooked brunch for Seaforth Manor residents on March 15 serv- ing up fresh bacon, eggs and toast to a delighted crowd. Elaine Burtch was also in to bake oatmeal raisin cookies with residents. She was a Eight tables for euchre as card season nears end The March social of the Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club was held at the Legion Hall , March 24 with hostesses Velma Preszcator, Beth Pryce and Robt. McMillan. Eight .tables of euchre were in play and winners were: ladies high, Velma Preszcator, ladies lone hands, Rita Van Bakel, ladies conso- lation, Dorothy Townsend, men's high, ::ack Muir; men lone hands, Harold Coleman and men's consolation, henry Klaver. The April social will be held at the Legion Hall, April 28 at 8 p.m. Hostesses will be Marian Gordon, Grace Broadfoot and Olave Papple. This will be the last social for the winter season so all mem- bers and associates and friends should try to attend. great friend and will be missed. A St. Patrick's Day dinner and dance was held March 17 and was a huge success. A dinner of dressed roast pork and roast beef with all the trimmings was enjoyed by all. The key lime pie and coconut pie were delicious. Several guests joined their families for the supper including Marg Horton's son Don from Hamilton. Entertainment for the dance was supplied by Max Ducharme and the Old Town Liners from Zurich. Many residents were dancing to waltzes, heel and toe polkas and the two step. Myrtle Hulley had a short and sweet dance with one of the staff members. Teresa Feeney, George Wright, Jean Hildebrand and many more of the resi,d'ents Were up dancing the night away. Murray Rollinson joined in for a dance and Jean Hildebrand was dancing to almost every song. The staff took part and dressed like in the 50s. Most wore jeans and t -shirts with the white bobby socks.
