THE 1950s - One of the eras 'cloggers will be visiting in their show on the weekend is the 1950s, when Barbie was big.
Word has it Elvis might also put in an appearance sometime daring the evening, along with other special guests.
"No -name " cloggers dance tributes in ERA
If the prospect of plenty of
fast footwork catches your
fancy Friday evening, you
would be wise to amble over
to the high school where
some "no -name" cloggers
and step -dancers will he
clickity-clacketting in their
-hi-annual show for cystic
fibrosis.
They used to he called the
Cavan Cloggers. But thc
group doesn't practise in the
basement of that church any-
more, so chief cloggcr and
fast -stepper Sherry McCall
says members don't know
what exactly to officially call
themselves these days.
But they're good at what
they do and they've been
working on this weekend's
production every Tuesday
since January at the Seaforth
arena. The dancers are stay-
ing in shape, among other
' things.
Friday night's show lasts
about two hours and is called
an "ERA" Dance. It goes all
through the years: in the

"A Tradition of Results.”
TUESDAY NIGHT PRACTICES - have been going on since early January for the clog-
gers who are putting on Friday night's "ERA" Dance performance at SDHS.
1800s dancing around the
Maypole, to Scottish
Highlanders dancing over
their swords, to Charleston
South Carolina, into the
"flapper" era, and off along
with Fred Astaire and Ginger
Rogers. There's even a trib-
ute to Celtic barndances in
south-western Ontario in the
1960s.
Elvis might even he in the

There are a couple of "spe-
cial guests," and one real spe-
cial guest," according to
McCall.
There are 25 cloggers in the
the group with no name that
is putting on the show, and
about 15 step -dancers.
McCall says this is her last
year for teaching step -danc-
ing, which she has done for
the last 25 years.
The show gets underway at

Fire department may host annual convention
Seaforth Council has given
approval for the Seaforth and
District Fire Department to
host thc Fire Fighters'
Convention in the year 2000,
but the department is still
waiting for approval by the
Fire Fighters' Association of
Ontario.
Fire Department representa-
tive Dave do Vries told coun-
cil this is the first time that
Huron County will potential-
ly host the fire fighters' annu-
al convention.
He explained that Seaforth
has not been fully approved'
by the Fire Fighters'
Association of Ontario.
Their executive will make a
the final decision in April on
the Seaforth location,
although the town's facilities
have already been approved.
If fully approved, the con-
vention is likely to draw
some 2000 people; among

ing needs of poorer school
boards in the province.
Thuss said he does not Zook
at the increase as a windfall
but a reflection of the hoards
past fiscal responsibility.
The other grant cut causing
concerns, at least for Carroll
at the AMDSB, is the lower
amount of funding the board
has been allocated for trans-
portation. The director stated
since the board has gone to
"great pains" over the last few
years to make busing as effi-
cient as possible, he doesn't
know what thc shortfall will
effect.
"We don't have any frills to
knock off," he said.
One grant did, however,
provide some encouraging
news for the board. Carroll
noted that the Early Learning
Grant should help ensure that
there is enough funding for
junior kindergarten in the
coming years.
"I think it will guarantee
that junior kindergarten can
continue," he said, adding
that this is a decision that will
be made by trustees at a later
date.
As for the rest of the new
funding model's effects on the
board and its schools, Carroll
said they won't know until
more detailed information is
obtained and analyzed. The
director noted that it is also
too early to tell if the numbers
will result in any layoffs with-
in the AMDSB.
"We arc really not that far
yet," he said.
them, fire fighters, campers,
and spectators. The conven-
tion would be held on Civic
Holiday weekend with cours-
es for fire fighters from all
over the province preceding
the convention in the first
week of August.
As Chairman to the com-
mittee organizing the conven-
tion, de Vries confirmed that
the 1998 convention will he
held in St. Jacobs, while the
100th Anniversary conven-
tion will he held in Paris. He
explained there is a learning
experience of sitting on the
Paris committee. By learning
how the planning and organi-
zation is done in Paris,
Seaforth can hope for a suc-
cessful convention of their
own, and de Vries hopes that
the contenders for the 2001
convention will be able to
consider the success of
Scaforth's convention when
planning their own for 2001.
Excited and eager, de Vries
and his committee wait for
the big decision which may
sec Seaforth hosting the 99th
Annual Fire Fighters'
Convention in the year 2000.
