HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1998-03-25, Page 9 (2)Edged 2-1 in front of 1,100 fans Cents ousted The Exeter Hawks wrested the Morenz Division champi- onship back from the Seaforth Centenaires with a 2-1 win in front of an esti- mated 1,100 fans at Exeter Sunday night. The defending champion Centenaires forced a seventh and deciding game in their Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D"evelopment League playoff with a 6-3 in front of an officially announced 756 -fans in Seaforth Friday. Both were great games. The Seaforth juniors won the Morenz crown by ousting Exeter, defending OHA champs at the time, in six games, last spring. The Cents entered the week down two games to one, but edged Exeter 2-1 in another thriller in Seaforth last Tuesday night to even the series, before dropping a 7-3 decision in Exeter on Wednesday to enter the weekend with their backs to the wall, no tommorrows, etc. Dave Farquhar's goal at 3:08 of the third period took the title Sunday. The two teams were tied 1-1 after the opening 20 minutes, with Jo Jeff Dunbar opening the scor- ing for Seaforth at 14:45 and Jason Dunlop replying for the Hawks with 20 seconds left in the period. Shaun Brooker and Laura Noakes ' TME HURON EXPOSITOR, March 25, 19911-9 CLASSIC CONFRONTATIONS - Three of the four games the Centenaires and Hawks played last week featured junior hockey at its finest and full houses in both rinks. Wins Eisler bursary Big season for Seaforth skater - Shaun Brooker of High Street has won the Seaforth Figure Skating Club's Lloyd Eilscr bursary award after a successful season. With partner Laura Noakes of Exeter, the local 11 -year- old placed .sixth in pairs on Mar. 15 at the All -Ontario Interclub Championships in Gravenhurst. Noakes is nine -years -old and the arca juvenile pair is coached by John Bauman of the Scaforth, Goderich and Blyth figure skating clubs. They also placed first, rep- resenting Interclub North. at the Western Ontario Interclub Championships at Walpole Island, after finishing second at the prior local intercluh competition in Stratford on Feb. 22. Back on Jan. 16, Brooker and Noakes were notified they had qualified for the 1998 Western Ontario section development team. The pair placed third'in a competition at London Jan. 17, fifth at Delhi on Dec. 7 and third at Mooretown on Nov. 22. ON HIS OWN Shaun also skates solo in preliminary "B" men's events. . At thc Western Ontario interclub event on Walpole Island he was sixth in thc finals and third .in the semi- finals, after finishing first for Interclub North in the event at Stratford. He was also third at both London in January and Mooretown in November. Brooker has passed his junior bronze test and will continue to train on his own and with his partner kir both events throughout the spring and summer, while compet- ing with the development team.
