biodiversity plan of action
Agriculture and Agri -Food Canada's
response to the challenge of pro-
tecting agricultural biodiversity in
Canada was released in February.
Biodiversity in Agriculture,
Agriculture and Agri -Food Canada's
(AAFC) Action Plan, sets the foundation
for promoting sustainability in agro-
ecosystems while respecting natural
ecosystems. The strategy is aimed at
increasing awareness and understanding
of biodiversity in agriculture.
Biodiversity is the wide range of charac-
teristics of all living organisms and their
ecological settings. The use of sustainable
agricultural practices, already adopted by
thousands of Canadian farmers, is an
example of practices that can conserve
and enhance biodiversity.
The strategy will set up a process to
conserve and facilitate access to genetic
resources important to agriculture and
will allow for the sharing of knowledge,
expertise and technologies between gov-
ernment and industry to enhance biodi-
versity conservation.
The' AAFC departmental document
was developed from the Convention on
Biological Diversity which was signed by
more than 100 countries, including
Canada, in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992.
Following the convention, Canada's fed-
eral, provincial and territorial govern-
ments, through consultation with industry,
the scientific community. conservation
groups, research institutions ad the public,
developed the Canadian Biodiversity
Strategy (CBS). The document is AAFC's
response to the CBS and sets in motion a
plan whereby governments would, among
other things, work to maintain the agricul-
tural resource base through research. pol-
icy and program reform and economic
incentives.
Two additional documents. entitled
Biodiversity Initiatives. Agriculture and
Agri -Food Canada and Biodiversity
Initiatives, Canadian Agricultural
Producers, outline current AAFC and pro-
ducer initiatives to protect biodiversity.
The Canadian agricultural producers
document, which was created in co-oper-
ation with the National Agriculture and
Environment Committee and the
Canadian Cattlemen's Association. show
how Canada's agricultural sector is man-
aging grasslands to maximize both
wildlife habitat and forage production. In
addition, the document gives examples of
how woodlot habitats are being enhanced
and how the industry is actively monitor-
ing and responding to the impact of agri-
cultural activities on water resources.
AAFC's work toward biodiversity
preservation includes the department's
initiatives in the areas of ecosystems. wild
flora and fauna and genetic resources pro-
tection.
Milk could fight cancer
Enjoy a big glass of milk with your
steak. You could be fighting cancer.
Milk and meat fat contain a unique fatty
acid called conjugated linoleic acid
(CLA) that may have anticancer proper-
ties.
Based on work with sheep and goats,
experiments are currently underway at
Agriculture and Agri -Food Canada's
Lethbridge Research Centre in Alberta
to increase the CLA content in beef to
produce a value-adued product for
health -conscious consumers. Previous
research with sheep and goats, has
shown increasing the CLA content of
meat and milk by 200 to 300 per cent is
possible with the addition ,of safflower
or canola oil to animal diets.
