Farmers accept responsibility in dealing with environmental issues, says Tony Morris n February, before 600 municipal leaders gathered at the Rural Ontario Municipalities Association (ROMA) conferences in Toronto, the Ontario Farm Environmental Coalition (OFEC) unveiled its proposals for dealing with the growing concern over the handling and storage of agricultural nutrients - par- ticularly livestock manure. "Farmers accept their responsibility in. dealing with environmental issues and encourage all farmers in the province to document and implement nutrient man- agement plans," said Tony Moms, chair of the OFEC Nutrient Management Working Group. "We will say what we will do, do what we say - and prove it." This strategy is truly a partnership approach with farm organizations work- ing with the Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, as well as municipal planners, ROMA and the University of Guelph. "Farmers do care," said Dr. Gord Surgeoner of the University of Guelph. "Through leadership and consensus building, Ontario farmers arc committed to ensuring the sustainability of our nat- ural resources." This latest strategy for handling agri- cultural nutrients is a balanced appmach between agriculture's growth potential and municipal concerns over odor and water quality. 1t meets the needs for a consistent approach across the province. Public forums for nutrient manage- ment planning (NMP) were held across Ontario to inform stakeholders about Ontario's NMP strategy. A series of nutrient management workshops will be held from mid-March • to the end of April. For more information, contact Tony Morris at 519-367-2136 or David Armitage, OFEC Secretary at 416-485- 3333, ext. 239. Do farmers every retire? On many farms, seniors are still around the job site, and may never com- pletely retire. They want to help out and can still be very productive, but their abilities and limitations must be recog- nized. MINERAL LEASING IN ONTARIO We are a privately owned firm that leases rights to 100.000 acres per year for oil and gas exploration. A mineral lease is a document that we enter into with the landowner that allows us the right to explore for oil or gas under their lands 1,. New and improved technology is available to geologists to help them determine new locations to drill oil and gas wells. There could be oil or gas under your lands! Prior to drilling any wells we will conduct seismic testing to make sure that we are in the right spot. Our seismic testing will not cost you anything. We pay full crop compensation for anything growing in the field All damages are covered in full by the exploration company. N When we drill a well we only take up about an acre for the time it takes to drill. If we hit a pool of oil or gas you receive a monthly royalty when we put the well into production. If we come to your door we would appreciate you allowing us enough time to explain our hopes and plans for your area. We are a Grand Bend company that prides itself on having a good working relationship with the local community. We lease in Essex, Kent. Elgin, Lambton, Middlesex and Huron Counties. We are here to serve you as well as the explora- tion company.
