each category and are part
of what cowboys strive
for. That and prize money.
"Being my transition
year. it's going to he excit-
ing. 1 plan on going out
there, being the young guy
and doing real good." he
said:
Kenny won the ORA
steer riding event last sea-
son and the Cantel series.
He has been competing
since he was seven, one
year earlier than the mini-
mum age requirement.
They lied about his age to
get the eager cowboy an
early start.
But don't call thein
cowboys.
Although it is a title
given to the competitors,
BJ prefers to be called a
bullrider, reserving the
cowboy title for the men
who work on ranches and
live a completely different
lifestyle.
The Prince's lifestyle
reflects the rodeo, not the
ranch.
They are up, doing
chores every morning at 6
a.m. like other farm boys,
looking after stables and
livestock at the Prince's
farm on the edge of
Wingham.
They attend school, get
good grades and arc
expected to attend univer-
sity or college and plan for
a regular future, outside
the rodeo.
On weekends, they
practice at an indoor arena
at the farm which BJ says
helps give them an edge.
As far as he knows,
they are the only ones who
are ahlc to practice in the
winter with their own
roughstock and facilities.
They practice and train
hard for their events. lift-
ing weights. stretching
and playing other sports to
keep in shape for the rig-
orous rides.
They don't offer
straight answers to ques-
tions about the 'best rides
that have earned them top
ORA positions.
BJ said when you ask a
hullrider that question. he
said the story of an eight
second ride can he
stretched into a three-hour
conversation.
"The hest ride's the one
to come." said Kcn, proud
' the boy's accomplish-
ments:
Do farmers every retire?
What other occupations
have people beyond the
normal age of retirement
operating and ,working
around equipment?
Farming is unique in this
regard, a fact that's reflect,
ed in accident records. For
example, a 1997 report
from the Canadian
Agricultural Injury
Surveillance Prbgram
noted that per capita rates
of farm fatalities are high-
er in men over the age of
60.
