Clark, who resides in London with his wife Lori and their son, said he has a clientele of over 450 hors- es within an hour's drive of his home. However, horses are not the only animals h! has had to shoe, he said, explaining that he was called in to fit a team of oxen with shoes at Pioneer Village in London. Because of a farrier's close contact with large animals, he said it is important that any farrier be in top physical condi- tion, for the safety of both the animal and the farrier. "If I have a day off, I rest up," says Clark, adding, "I always do stretchi,ig exercises to stay in shape. He schedules his work so he can get a full day's work within a geographic area, but, said Clark, how he slates his appointments has been one of the keys to his success. He explained that the majority of his work comes from horse owners who although they want to be present when he works on their animals, must go to work themselves. Clark said he tries to accommo- date them by scheduling a trim or shoeing after nor- mal work hours. Moreover, Clark said stan- dard business courtesy has been the basis of his busi- ness. He provides a 'written fact sheet explaining to his customers what they can expect from him and what he expects from them. Healthy seniors A market is booming as the massive baby -boom population gradually gains senior citizenship. A recent National Institute of Nutrition study analyzed the needs of the growing seniors population and identified opportunities for Canada's agri-food sector. Over the next 25 years the proportion of the pop- ulation 65 years -of -age and older will rise from 12 per cent to more than 20 per cent. This and a com- prehensive survey of existing products and ser- vices offered by the agri- food and. health care industries, identified an emerging demand for value-added products which meet the nutritional demands of today's active seniors. Agriculture and Agri - Food Canada provided 50 per cent of the research funding: An executive summary of the report is available at htt://ACEIS.agr.ca/misb/el derly/eelderly.html The sign says It all. (Helm photo) For example he will set up a shoeing schedule for a particular animal but includes the fact he will replace a thrown shoe as soon as possible and requests owners to notify him as quickly as they can. Clark said he had been showing his own horses since the '80s and realized there was a need for farri- ers, noting, in the London area, there are currently' no more than 12 active farri- ers. After three years as a professional farrier, and putting on about 2,000 pair of shoes per year, Clark said his enthusiasm for the job has not diminished. "I really can't think of anything else I'd rather be doing." r Farm Progress '98 - Page 27 e e /e AUTOMOTIVE COLLECTIBLES *Original Auto and Truck Sales Literature • Boob *Magazines *Manuals •Post Cards *Advertisements *Posters •Model Cars •License Plates *Maps *Metal Advertising Signs Also *General Interest Collectibles *Used Housewares •Flea Market Items `ALTER MSULA 20 Nelson St., Exeter (By water tower) 235-1088 %! i .J REAL ESTATE LTD NFU Brussels, Ont.
