Wildfong's style works for Red Raiders
Tenacious as a terrier,
Danny Wildfong is one of the
most popular hockey players
to have toiled for Seaforth's
Centenaires in this decade.
The local juniors had to pay
$1,000 to the Clinton minor
system so they could sign
him as a 14 -year-old.
And he was worth every
penny of it.
On top of being any coach's
dream and a fan favourite at
forward because of his enthu-
siastic, never -say -never style
of play, "The Fong" was
named the Cents' most
improved player in 1990-91,
his first season in Seaforth,
and was their leading scorer
and most valuable player the
next campaign.
He is now 21 and in his
third year on a full scholar-
ship at Colgate University in
Hamilton, N.Y., playing first
line and a key role for their
Red Raiders in the ECAC.
Coaches are still singing his
praises, with a tune that
sounds familiar.
Wildfong is not very big at
5' 10" and about 190 lbs., but
he plays with a lot of heart
and always seems to battle
his way to the top.
"Dan's developed and come
along nicely," Colgate hock-
ey coach Don Vaughan said
in. a recent interview with Pat
Payton of the St. Marys
Journal -Argus.
`Former Cent ... Dan Wildfong
AN HONEST PLAYER
"Dan is a pretty honest
player. He's a very hard
worker, very disciplined, and
he complements the guys
he's playing with."
The Red Raiders faltered
down the stretch and finished
fifth in the ECAC this sea-
son. Yale won its first-ever
crown in the 12 -team league.
Colgate plays Harvard a best -
of -three this weekend in the
first round of the playoffs.
Danny finished the regular
schedule with an 0.63 scoring
percentage from three goals
and nine assists for 12 points
(tied for 64th in the league)
in 19 games.
Last season as a sopho-
more, Wildfong broke his
wrist just after the New Year
and his coach says it left a
huge hole in the Red Raider
lineup. He still netted 18
points in 25 games, by scor-
ing seven goals and 11
assists, and had a +4 plus-
minus rating.
In his rookie year at
Colgate, 1995-96, he got 10
points from four goals and
six assists in 32 games, the
most games and points for a
first-year player on the squad.
After leaving the local
Centenaires he played with
the junior B St. Marys
Lincolns for three seasons,
and wowed the fans and
coaches there. In his final
season he chalked up a club-
recordl07 points and picked
up enough silverware to start
a mine after being voted the
Lincs' MVP, fan favorite and
all-star game MVP.

`Satellite bingo' hurts attendance
Seaforth's recreation direc-
tor Marty Bedard's report to
council this month,, and the
minutes of the Scaforth and

Bingo" the province (Ontario
Lottery Corp.) has recently
initiated.
"Graham (arena manager
Nesbitt) will look into having
one of the TV bingos at the
Seaforth and District
Community Centres," min-
utes of the arena management
board's Feb. 19 meeting
record:
in sociology and anthropolo-
gy. He hopes to be a consul-
tant after graduating from
Colgate, but quickly adds
that he'd like to play "a bit
more hockey."
Several graduating Red
Raiders have managed to
hook up with teams in the
east Coast Hockey League.
"They've got pretty good
connections at Colgate,"
Wildfong points out.
"I hope I get a chance to
play somewhere. (Pro teams)
don't really contact you until
your senior year because they
know you're going to stay in
school."
For now though, he's happy
where he is.
"I love it... the atmos-
phere," he says. "You're
going top a top-notch school
and you're playing hockey at
a top level too.
"You're getting the best of
both worlds."
