1I—THE HURON EXPOSITOR, March 11, 1$SM Winner scored with 14 seconds left Cents send Irish packing with late surge The Lucan Irish have more time than they originally bar- gained for to prepare for St. Patrick's Day now. Because their hockey sea- son is over. The Centenaires sent the lira -place Irish packing from the Nlorenz Division playoffs in front of about 600 fans at the Seaforth arena Friday night, with a dandy come- back. The Seaforth juniors trailed 3-1 going into the final peri- od. But Scott Van Dooren skat- ed over the blueline and somehow mesmerized Lucan's goalie with 14 sec- onds left in regulation time. He found high twine for the winner, to give the Centenaires a 4-3 win over Lucan, and oust the Irish in six games from further com- petition in this season's Ontario -Hockey Association Junior "D"evelopment League playoffs. The Cents, who are defend- ing division champs but who finished in the fourth and final playoff spot this season, advance against the Exeter Hawks in a best -of -seven division final that began in Exeter last night (Tuesday). Results weren't available at press time. Centenaires manager Dave Parsons has watched more than a bit of hockey in his time. He calls Friday night's final 20 minutes " the most spirit- ed, moxy period I've ever seen." It was the same Scott, Van Dooren again, who cut Lucan's lead to one goal 2:45 into the third. GREAT SHIFT Midway through the final frame the line of Brandon Nash, Jo Jeff Dunbar and Tim Eifert put on a real show for a shift, hemming the Irish in their own end. Eifel, nded it in fine fash- ion with the equalizer at exactly the 10:00 mark. Then Lucan coach Jason Bukala got tossed, setting up the dramatics in the final minute. Seaforth outshot the visitors 15-9 in the final 20 minutes, and 37-30 in the game. Goalie Scott Wood seems back in form. He racked up the win between the Seaforth pipes. Jeff Volland got Seaforth's only goal of the first period. It ended 3-1 for the visitors. The second period was score- less. The Centenaires led the series three games to one at the start of last week, but the Irish inched back in it with a Corrine Leonhardt, left, Laura Strangway, Cheryl Thompson and Jillian Houston played in the Huron Perth girls all star volleyball game held at Seaforth District High School last week. Thompson and Strangway played for the senior team. They won their first game and lost the second and third. Leonhardt and Houston played on the junior team which won. (Fitton photo) More from Tuckersmith than Seaforth using arena More young athletes from Tuckcrsmith Township than from Seaforth arc using the local arena this winter. According to minor sports registration figures compiled by the Seaforth and District Community Centres hoard 533 young athletes in figure skating, minor hroomball and hockey, and ringette are reg- • istcrcd this season. Of these, 165 youths, or 31 per cent hail from Tuckcrsmith and 152, or 28.5 per cent, are from Seaforth. Five arca municipalities own and operate the local arena and community centre, and pay for it on a user per- centage basis that is regularly adjusted. Seaforth's proposed contri- bution percentage for 1997- 98 is 38.3 percent, down sig- nificantly from 1991-92 when it was 48.3 per cent, and from the 53.3 per cent it was responsible for when the arena was first built in the early 1980s. Tuckersmith's proposed contribution percentage this year is 28.5 per cent and McKillop Township's is 22.9 per cent. There are 119 young ath- letes from McKillop regis- tered, or 22.3 per cent. ORIGINAL PACT West Perth (Hibbert) Township has 33 young ath- letes registered, or 6.2 per cent, the same as its proposed contribution percentage. Hullett Township has 22 youths playing minor sports in town, or 4.1 per cent of those registered, again the same as its proposed share of the 97-98 budget. There are 42 athletes from "other" than the five munici- palities, or 7.9 per cent, a per- centage Seaforth picks up under the terms of the origi- nal agreement. Community Centres manger Graham Nesbitt says Seaforth pays a higher per- centage than its registrations because of this original agreement in which the part- ners agreed the actual usage/contribution percent- age figures would be adjust- ed every three years, but CONTINUED on Page 7. Eifert got the only Seaforth goal, as the Irish out -shot the Cents 28-26. SPINAL SCARE Local fans who made the pilgrimage got a scare when Van Dooren was taken from the ice on a stretcher and rushed to London hospital by ambulance with a suspected spinal injury on a play that drew no penalty during the game. But it wasn't as serious as it looked, and he got his back in spades two night's later. Lucan finished 21 points in front of the Cents this season. Seaforth won the season's series against Exeter three games to two, outscoring them 19 to 14 in the process. The Centenaires always play well on Exeter's big ice surface, and beat the Hawks twice down south on their ..own pond during the regular schedule. And Seaforth hasn't lost on home ice in more than three months now, since Dec. 5. Whatever last night's out- come, the Morenz final resumes in Seaforth Friday night at 8:30 p.m. Game three is scheduled for Exeter Sunday night at the same time, with game four back in Seaforth next Tuesday night, beginning at 8:15 p.m. All Deposits 5 Insured 44A• Within limits Rates subject • '` To Verification .4% 5 Year Annual 47% .25% 5.25% Yw 52Yraa 3O o = ill b+nutl txw qry Dsyra Cull Investment Centre Investment & Tax Planning Secure Investment Products ... from people you can trust SEAFORTH 96 Main St. 527-0420 Serving Seaforth Since 1986 AfT , Questions & Answers tei["LOAS about grief recovery* foomi.A bow s. tow, .(N writ/ Q. I'm very disappointed in my adult children. Since their dad died they haven't done much to ease my pain or loneliness. A. When we are lonely, it is easy to wish that our children or others will fill the void left by the absence of our spouse. The reality of the situation hurts but we must realize that the lives of others are going on uninterrupted. Adult children are busy in the pursuit of their own lives. Take on the responsibility of fulfilling your own needs and expect less from others. You'll soon find it a benefit.
