The Huron Expositor, 1998-03-25, Page 51 Clinton's presentation to the school board Following is eke verbatim presenia- taken under consideration. tion of spokesperson Pat Taylor of the Clinton office to the Avon -Maitland District School Board in regards to the placement of an amalgamated board office. I was looting for a quote start this presentation with, and with the help of a friend, 1 have chosen a quote by Tom Peters. "The truly excel- lent organizations are not 1000 per cent better than the other organizations, they are 1 per cent better in a thou- sand ways. Therefore, the road to excellence is a series of small but critical steps in which we pay attention to each of the tiny and seeming- ly insignificant details of our workplace. As we improve these, we arc well on our way to a truly excellent organiza- tion. One of the significant details for our Avon Maitland District School Board is the location of our Administration Centre. We arc not here to say it should be in Stratford or that it should be in Clinton. This is your decision to make, but we feel you should know all staff .at both centers are equally concerned and all will be impacted by the diffi- cult decision you must make. The decision to he made must he based on what is hest for. the whole of the organiza- tion and not any one particu- lar part. This includes hoard staff, trustees, school staff, students and taxpayers. As Henry Ford said : Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. • We are not here to speak against any and all change. We wish to present to you the thoughts and ideas thc Clinton Centre staff feel arc the most important to be When asked, the concem that was voiced by most of the staff, was administration cen- tre employees be based out of one office and this office be a new location for all con- cerned. We feel there is a def- inite need to have the staff housed in one building, not only for logistics, but also to encourage the feeling we are one staff now as opposed to being the Huron and the for- mer Perth. The staff at the Clinton Centre experienced a move 17 months ago. We joined some staff already in an under -used wing of one of our secondary schools. There was tension and disagreement at that time. As an example of this, there was a problem with the location of the wash- room on the second floor. Shortly after we moved in, a sign was placed on the wash- room door saying "Female staff only." 1. met a student in the washroom that told me in no uncertain terms that she was still going to use that washroom whether the sign was there or not. After a Friday morning meeting where 1 stated that I didn't care with whom 1 shared the washroom, as long as there was one there to use, the sign soon came down. We are here to tell you that many good things came out of that move. One of the noticeable things at the time of the move was the feeling of ownership over the building that we were currently in. Some of the people moving into the build- ing felt unwelcome and some of the staff already there felt they were being overrun with the new staff taking over "their space." We feel to move either of the current offices into the other would result in these same feelings. Although we would all love to have a brand new building to work in we realize this idea is an "impossible dream." Given the budget constraints the board is cur- rently facing, we feel it is important to have our office in a building that is currently owned by the board. We feel it would be careless use of the taxpayers money to pur- chase or build a new building when we have excess school spaces that could easily be converted to office space. In considering any of the pro- posed spaces it is very impor- tant to make a selection that would allow for reasonable renovation costs and low ongoing maintenance costs. One of the concerns expressed was we make sure there is enough parking at the new facility to accommodate all staff and for visitors to the building. The new site for a head office should he geographi- cally located so it is central to all parts of our district board. The most important reason from the hoard's point of view will be the travel costs incurred by travel to and from our schools, by both the administration team as well as the school staff coming to meetings. Although we arc moving toward having more meetings electronically, there arc still times when staff must travel for meetings held in one location. We also hope the board would consider the travel time needed to get to and from work by all staff at the new centre. I am sure you all know from travelling to and from the many meetings you must attend, the length of time driving can increase the length of your work day con- siderably. The busier we all get with our work here, our other commitments we may Activities galore during March break Don't miss out on the activ- ities for children during "March Break" put on by the Scaforth Recreation Department and Seaforth Co- operative Childrens' Centres. Our final request would be you make this decision a top priority. All people have plans and dreams and we are no different. As employees of a school board we have been living with uncertainty about many things for what seems like ages at this point. Unfortunately many of us have been forced to delay decisions about our futures until we know where we are going to be working. We encourage the commit- tee to put aside any personal, political and area prejudices to make a well informed decision based on facts. We urge you to base your deci- sion on the fundamental prin- ciple for fairness and equity to all. Doing so will, in the long term, create a better functioning system and allow us, as an organization, to bet- ter do our jobs in supporting our many students in their quest to "Learn for a Lifetime." A quick decision will allow us to move for- ward to face the many chal- lenges that still lie ahead. HAIR ON WHEELS Siao 75 "We come to you." Call today for your appointment.
