Phillips photo) Lottery proceeds enhance technology BY GREGOR CAMPBELL SSP Staff Gambling has paid off for the Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board. "We have done vory well once again in the 'Fantasy Lottery', director of educa- tion Gactan Blanchette reported to the hoard's Feb. 23 regular meeting at Dublin. "On the first lottery, 2,510 (12.55 per cent) tickets were purchased by residents of Huron and Perth counties. For the second 'Fantasy Lottery' 3,250 (14.32 per cent) tickets were purchased by residents of the two. "This translates to a net proceeds of $126,587 for our system. "By combining the pro- ceeds of the two lotteries with our TIPP 2 project, tech- nology for students in our system has been greatly enhanced," the director's report continues. "Wc cer- tainly would not be where we are today in technology with- out it." Trustees approved partici- pation in the third lottery of the Monsignor Feeney Foundation, now in the plan- ning stage, "with proceeds directed towards the enhance- ment of technology for our students." "BETTER ODDS" Trustee Bernard Murray said he was "pleasantly sur - prized" by the success of the first two "Fantasy" lotteries here. Trustee Mike Miller said despite the reluctance of some to gamble, school boards have'an advantage when in comes to such lotter- ies, which have proliferated in the province and country for various money -making purposes recently. Chair Ron Marcy agreed. It will involve a "similar major prize board as the last one but with better odds," director of • education Blanchette reported. Trustees noted the area board sold 740 more tickets for the second "Fantasy Lottery" than it did the first, and that for the most recent "we' sold out the early bird draw." Man fined for assault A 2I -year-old Walton man was fined $500 for assaulting his fiance. Judge GJ Brophy told Jamie Edward McNichol, "If anger or alcohol is a problem, now at the age of 21, k the time to deal with it... any- thing which led you to take the actions you took leads me to be believe a problem exists." McNichol, of RR#1 Walton, pleaded guilty in Goderich Criminal Court on Feb. 23 to assault causing bodily harm. Crown Robert Morris said McNichol and his common- law spouse had returned to their home drunk on the night of July 20. The woman, who had arrived home first, came downstairs when McNichol arrived with friends and turned on music. She began to argue with McNichol. Both slapped each other. Then he pushed her against a wall and struck her face. He pushed her as she tried leaving. He also pulled her by her hair. When she went to Seaforth hospital -with bruises on her body, she was told to take Tylenol 3 if she needed it. Defense lawyer Glen Carey said the couple have had no further difficulties.
