Board office options presented, decision now up to Avon Maitland trustees
BY TRISH WILKINSON
CLINTON - For weeks, the
Avon Maitland District
School Board has been flood-
ed with facts, figures and
debates over where its new
headquarters should be locat-
ed.
Now, it's up to trustees to
make a decision.
Trustees Colleen Schenk
and Leslie Wood presented
their headquarters site review
work group information
report to hoard members last
Tuesday night, outlining what
they consider to he the local
public school board's most
viable options.
They said much of the
recent research has been on a
multi -site option which
would include filling extra
space at four or five different
schools with administration,
while enhancing programs for
the students.
The trustees elaborated on
"option B" in their report,
which includes using Seaforth
District High School (SDHS),
Central Huron Secondary
School (CHSS), Stratford
Northwestern and Stratford
Central schools. However,
since the goal is to enhance
the schools as well as making
room for administration, the
report adds that "Mitchell
District High School may
wish to be included in this
approach".
"The emphasis...has been to
create an advantage for the
school by fitting an adminis-
trative function within the
school, not on top of it," the
report states.
Janet Baird -Jackson, the
superintendent of business,
outlined the estimated costs
involved in renovating
schools for different adminis-
tration centres at about
$585,354. However, she
added that with the sale of the
two non -instructional build-
ings in Stratford, the costs
would workout to only about
a $5,300 difference.
VARIOUS OPTIONS
Trustees Schenk and Wood
also presented the hoard
information and data on
"option A", or single site.
They noted that Stratford,
Clinton and Seaforth were all
locations that could be con-
sidered to individually house
the board office.
Schenk stated one of these
options "appears to be occu-
pying a major portion of
Seaforth District High School
following its closure for use
as a secondary school."
"If the closure option were
to be taken, the affected stu-
dents would have access to a
more complete course calen-
dar in a fashion that can be
more easily timetabled at
Central Huron Secondary
School," Schenk read. "The
economic spin offs for the
Seaforth community would
ultimately be positive, should
the office relocate to that
community."
The final option in the
administration centre study is
listed as a two-year interim
solution for the board. The
report states this would
include using CHSS in
Clinton and Britannia Street
in Stratford as well as finding
5,070 square feet of other
satellite office space in the
district.
