To change your name, or
not to change your name?
As a bride today, you
have a lot of options.
Consider your particular
situation and determine
which option fits your
need and preference.
Even though over the
years most women have
taken their husband's last
name, you are not legally
required to do so.
More and more women
today are choosing to keep
or incorporate their own
last name.
Decisions are based on a
variety of reasons:
professional status, ease
of spelling and
pronunciation, desire to
keep your family name,
feeling of commitment and
tradition, for children's
sake, or for social ease.
You must determine which
name you will use legally
and then which name you
will use socially.
The following are a few
options and what is required
to exercise them:
• Keep your maiden name:
In most areas you shouldn't
have to notify any official
agencies. Check areas for
any special requirements.
Sign your maiden name on

the marriage certificate and
on all legal documents just
as you did before.
Use your maiden name
professionally and your
husband's name socially:
Many women are choosing
this option, especially when
they are already established
and known professionally by
their maiden names.
Problems can arise when
you mix the two names on

legal documents and when
filing your joint tax return.
The IRS may require proof
of your marriage and
request a notarized copy of
your marriage license.
• Hyphenate your names:
This is a popular option
when you want to retain
both last names.
The woman's last name
appears first, followed by
the husband's last name.
The woman may decide to
use the full hyphenated
name on legal documents,
and use only her husband's
last name socially.
V' Taking your husband's
name: If you are planning to
change your name by taking
or adding your husband's
last name, start by signing
that name on your marriage
license and all future
documents.
Get the necessary
paperwork or requirements
to record your name change
on all legal and official
records.
V Have your husband take
your name:
It's not a common practice
but today some grooms are
changing to their wife's last
name. -
