SE JCTING ABRIDESMAID'S D •
Selecting a Bridesmaid's
dress everyone will love:
Tradition holds that the bride
has the privilege of selecting
the fabric and the colour of the
bridesmaid's dress, and almost
every woman has horror
stories about gowns they had
to endure as a bridesmaid.
Bridesmaids often feel they're
at the mercy of the bride's
taste. But today there are
stylish options and most
brides consult at least one of
their bridesmaids during the
selection process to ensure the
groups satisfaction.
Price is often the first
consideration when choosing a
dress. As the bride well
knows, being in a wedding is
expensive, so it's best to keep
the bridal parties' finances in
mind when shopping.
Wholesale bridal shop offer
discounted gowns, and sales
in the formal section of
department stores often
generate bargains. It is
possible today to find styles
simple enough to be worn at
other formal functions, so the
dress need not be placed at the
back of the doset after the
wedding. To help defray some
of the cost of the bridesmaid's
dress, a bride may consider
paying a portion as her "thank
you" gift to her attendant.
To find a style that suits a
variety of figures, keep cuts
simple, and avoid excessive
decoration like sequins or lace
Classic sheath or fit -and -flare
dresses flatter a range of
figures, and are easy to alter
should extra fittings be
necessary. Tradition would
have bridesmaids dressed
alike, but the trend today is to
allow each to choose a
SS
different dress, provided it is
the same colour. Another
option is to allow each
bridesmaid to choose a
different colour fabric
maintaining that each dress is
the same style. This method
has the added benefit of
rendering a colourful
backdrop and visual contrast
for your wedding photos.
Whether the choice is casual
or formal, the bridemaid's
dress should be comfortable
and easy to wear. Fabrics like
chiffon, silk crepe, and silk
satin glide over the body, and
stay wrinkle -free for hours.
With today's technology, even
polyester or rayon blends look
rich and wear beautifully, at a
fraction of the cost. Keep in
mind the heavy fabrics like
taffeta or dupioni are more
expensive and may not wear
as well.
Bridemaid's shoes do not
necessarily have to be similar,
but they should be the same
colour so as not to attract
attention. If shoes are being
dyed, they should all be done
in the same shop to ensure a
correct match. Brides may
want to consider shoes in gold,
ivory, or black, as these are
easy colours to find and to
match.
Whichever way you decide
to go, remember that your
bridemaids are your friends
and your family. Treat them
with the respect you'd expect
if the tables were turned. And
above all, enjoy these times
together.
