approximately $10-15 each)
and purchased the mdlds at

Hoffman LaPorte made her
own table centerpieces - all

materials from wholesale
craft supply outlets.
"1 saw in a magazine what 1
wanted. I knew it would cost
a lot and 1 wanted a certain
color," she said.
She also purchased candle

Hoffman LaPorte has lent
these holders to friends for
their weddings and used
them for dinner parties.
With cranberry candles and
napkins in hand, Hoffman
LaPorte and her six
bridesmaids went shopping
for dresses and once they
found the material and style
that suited all, they shopped
some more at material stores
for the correct color. The

"1 think 1 saved a lot (of
money) but you have to
weigh the work," she said.
She emphasized one piece
of advice drummed into the
heads of brides-to-be, don't
leave anything to the last
minute, especially if you're
hand making items.
"I did my seating plan (for
over 300 guests) the night
before the wedding," said
Hoffman LaPorte.
Continuing with her thrifty
goal, she displayed the

typed on the computer,
inside an old picture frame
she found in her parents'
basement. She painted the
frame in cranberry and
placed it on an art easel at
the hall entrance.
A set of candelabras that

The old electrical set wasn't
being used so she painted
them white and added some
greenery and white tooling.
She also used an old
mailbox, knocked off its post
by a snowplow, that her
father kept in the basement.

She simply painted it white,

Hoffman LaPorte added a
touch of sentiment to her
wedding by remembering
her fiance's deceased mother
and both of their deceased
grandparents in a candle -
lighting ceremony. While
candles adorned each table
setting, guests were asked
not to light them until after
the ceremony. With the hall
lights dimmed, she and her
husband then lit one candle
for each loved one and held
a moment of silence.
Other tips for brides-to-be
from Hoffman LaPorte:
Make a file to hold notes
and ideas for your wedding.
In her case, a briefcase
became her organizing tool.
Read wedding planning
books and talk to couples
already married, the advice
is helpful and they may
remind you to do something
you didn't think of.
"If someone offers the help,
take it," she said.
Use small white Christmas
lights behind tooling to add
a twinkling effect to the hall.
Use large artificial trees or
balloons to fill up the space
of a large hall.
Don't worry about the
weather. The most important
event of the day is your
marriage to a great guy.
If you have a large
wedding party, seating them
attractively at the head table
may be a problem. Try a
tiered stage with the bride
and groom and maid of
honor and best pian at the
top - like a wedding cake.
