"1 saw in a magazine what 1 wanted. I knew it would cost a lot and 1 wanted a certain color," she said. Hoffman LaPorte has lent these holders to friends for their weddings and used them for dinner parties. With cranberry candles and napkins in hand, Hoffman LaPorte and her six bridesmaids went shopping for dresses and once they found the material and style that suited all, they shopped some more at material stores for the correct color. The ushers' cumberbunds were natural foHowups. "1 think 1 saved a lot (of money) but you have to weigh the work," she said. She emphasized one piece of advice drummed into the heads of brides-to-be, don't leave anything to the last minute, especially if you're hand making items. "I did my seating plan (for over 300 guests) the night before the wedding," said Hoffman LaPorte. Continuing with her thrifty goal, she displayed the V top) r- • r 0 seating plan, which she typed on the computer, inside an old picture frame she found in her parents' basement. She painted the frame in cranberry and placed it on an art easel at the hall entrance. The old electrical set wasn't being used so she painted them white and added some greenery and white tooling. Hoffman LaPorte added a touch of sentiment to her wedding by remembering her fiance's deceased mother and both of their deceased grandparents in a candle - lighting ceremony. While candles adorned each table setting, guests were asked not to light them until after the ceremony. With the hall lights dimmed, she and her husband then lit one candle for each loved one and held a moment of silence. Other tips for brides-to-be from Hoffman LaPorte: Make a file to hold notes and ideas for your wedding. In her case, a briefcase became her organizing tool. Read wedding planning books and talk to couples already married, the advice is helpful and they may remind you to do something you didn't think of. "If someone offers the help, take it," she said. Use small white Christmas lights behind tooling to add a twinkling effect to the hall. Use large artificial trees or balloons to fill up the space of a large hall. Don't worry about the weather. The most important event of the day is your marriage to a great guy. If you have a large wedding party, seating them attractively at the head table may be a problem. Try a tiered stage with the bride and groom and maid of honor and best pian at the top - like a wedding cake.
