The social and not.
financial aspect of
'everyone pitching
in' for a wedding reception
brings a community
together.
In parts of the maritimes, a
wedding reception is the
focal point of community
events.
The first, most often, asked
question when the wedding
invitation is issued is: 'What
can I bring?'
It's a chance for the
community to come together
and do their part celebrating
the couples marriage.
To cater to a down-home
community ceilidh reception
'there are a few pointers to
remember.
If making arrangements to
Use large amounts of
ingredients, check
beforehand at the store.
Many store owners will
order in bulk.
Order the ingredients
needed in large quantities
early. Know exactly what
you want, and what types
of food you will need, from
hot casseroles to cold meats
and salads.
Distribute the menu for
large amounts of food
evenly among family and
friends, i.e. don't give Aunt
Hilda the job of making
three torts of potato salad
for two reasons: one, she'll
probably never talk to you
again and, the second
reason, it's too much for one
person to make. Divide it
between quite a few people.
Make sure the hall you
have booked has
refrigeration facilities so
people can drop off food
items prior to the reception.
You don't want people
attending the wedding with
macaroni salad or a hot
sweet and sour dish
balanced on their knees.
This could also prove a
health hazard.
For large platters of meat,
also order early. Do not
collect until the day of the
reception.
It's also common place for
those who are bringing food
to the reception to hold a
meeting about one week
prior, making sure
everything is under control.
The down-home ceilidh
reception is one of the
sincerest ice -breakers for
everyone where no strangers
are allowed -- they're just
friends you haven't met yet.
Of course, the best
compliment is when
someone asks who made
what dish and could they
have the recipe.
And like I said earlier, it's
not the financial aspect for
the do -it -yourself -reception;
it's just a chance to bring the
whole community together
for a good time.
And there is nothing
wrong with that.
