Forever, Fortune, wilt thou prove an
unrelenting foeeto love; And when use
meet a mutual heart, Come in between
and bid us part?
. —_James Thomson, poet
• 1700-1748
Ever since ancient times, people
have looked for ways to make
their marriages strong enough
to overcome the difficult realities of
life. -
Just as the poem above indicates,
fickle fortune and financial realities
have always interfered with the ideals
young lovers bring to their marriage.
vows.
So if you're about to get married,
you might want to consider what
you're saying when you whisper,
"Darling, I'll love you forever.":. ,
In the ancient books of the Hiriduts,
for example, it says a good way to
ensure a solid marriage is for the --
bride and groom to watch thesky on,
their wedding night. When the pole
-star appears, the groom is supposed
'-tb point at the star and say, "To me
' Brihaspati has given theF; obtaining
offspring through mc,.thy husband, live
with me a hundred autumns:" - , .
According to George Frazer's study
of magic and religion. The Golden ,
Bough, the intention of thepok-star
ceremony is plainly to guard against

"the fickleness of fortune and the
--instability of earthly bliss by the
steadfast influence of the constant
star."
Rev. Robert Ball of North Street
United Church in Goderich said
'anyone getting married need ask
themselves. what they mean by
'commitment.' The•Hindusequated
commitment with the constancy of a
• fixed star, but today we live in a
society which equates longevity -to
the life span of a disposable razor._
- According to Ball, marriage is a
chance to break that pattern and for
people to escape the malaise of
repeatedly hearing 'Nothing lasts
forever.' - •
Marriage; he said, is built on faith,
hope and effort. The making of a life-
long promise or commitment, said
Ball, is key to marriage because it
focuses -on a sense 'of wanting
. something better and mole stable in
our lives -- something you can count
on for better and for worse.
Without that sense of idealism, he
said, the "for worse" partof the
marriage ceremony might as well be
removed.
A bride-to-be once asked 'him if she
had to say, "Till death do us part,"
preferring instead to "say something
