Drug use figures double in last two years
BY DAVE EMSLIE
SSP News Staff
CLINTON - While many
parents might not be aware
of it, students in Huron
County are using drugs.
According to Meryl
Thomas, director of the
Huron Addiction Assessment
& Referral Centre. "At least
_ one-quarter of the student
body is using drugs" in the
county.
Thomas will be among the
speakers sharing information
during a Drug Awareness
Night being hosted by the
Clinton Community Policing
Committee tonight. She will
be coined by Sandy Stuart,
manager of the Clinton
office of the Huron -Perth
Centres for Children and
Youth, local solicitor Frank
Cameron, and John
Marshall and Don
Shropshall, community ser-
vices officers for the Huron
County Ontario Provincial
Police.
Thomas, commenting on
drug use among students in
the county, noted that usage
has gone. up. "It has doubled
in the last two years, she
said.
The most popular drug is
alcohol. "Approximately 65
per cent are using alcohol,"
Thomas said, adding, "When
they do drink, they use it to
excess."
Among those drinking, she
continued, "Grade 11 boys
are the highest risk group.
We're also finding more and
more young women are
starting to drink in the same
patten."
The second most used
drug by Huron students is
cannabis, and it is followed
by hallucinogens, "particular-
ly magic mushrooms,"
'Thomas said.
She also noted that chil-
dren are starting to use
drugs at a younger age.
"They are starting to use in
Grade 7 and 8. That's
scary.,.
These facts and more will
be shared during the Drug
Awareness Night, which will
be held in the Clinton Town
Hall auditorium beginning at
7:30 p.m. on Feb. 11.
Sherry Bezaire, chair of
the Community Policing
Committee, noted that the
committee decided to hold
the meeting to give informa-
tion to parents and members
of the public, along with any
children who want to attend.
The night is being held,
she saki, "to show the differ-
ent signs of drug use and
what to do if (parents) find
it."
OPP Constable Dwight
Adams, the liaison officer
with the committee, noted
that the idea for the aware-
ness night arose after he was
approached by some con-
cemed parents, "who sus-
pected their children might
be experimenti • with drugs
