Valentine's Day should be celebrated everyday - not just one day a year
It was one of the hardest
decisions The Huron
Expositor staff has had to
make.
We were required to pick
out five winning Valentine's
Day stories. The stories had
to convey romantasism, com-
mitment and bear all the fla-
vor off Valentine's Day.
Here are the five winning
articles.

Married 57 years
George and Edith Wright
George and Edith Wright
first met each other at a con-
cert.
Edith was out with another
date and things didn't' work
out with the other man.
Working at a knitting facto-'
ry in Clinton. She began dat-
ing George and.they went
together for seven years .
Then Edith went to work at a
knitting factory in St.
Catharines and in 1936 they
'were married after dating for
seven years.
George resides at the
Seaforth Manor Retirement
Home and.Edith is a resident
at the Seaforth Manor
Nursing Home.
Together they have four
children: three boys and a
girl; nine grandchildren and
umpteen grandchildren said
George. He says he's lost
track of the great -great
grand -children.

Couple meet in Netherlands
The year was 1981. The
month was June. A• dozen
buses in the Netherlands
stood ready for .different
European • destinations.
Hundreds of people with lug-
gage, eagerly looking for
buses with the same name as
their ticket.
I was with my best friend,
my sister and her best friend.
In the distance I saw him
walking. Running shoes,
jeans, t -shirt and a red lumber
jacket. He looked very North
American in this Dutch envi-
ronment. Well, I thought, not
much of a chance of him
travelling with us. So we
girls boarded early, to get
good scats, and lo and
behold, he gets in our bus.
The next hours my friends
and I spent enjoying the
scenery of the German coun-
try -side. We soon arrived by
our hotel in Brodenbach,
where the Rijn river meets
the Mosel. The slopes were
covered in grape vines ready
to be made into wine.
After settling in our room
we found a quaint cafe. There
he sat red jacket and all, and I
was introduced to my Jerry.
He informed me he was liv-
ing in Edmonton at that time,
and I had lived there for
seven years as a child. We
had a tot to talk about.
The next three days we
spent touring castles, sam-
pling wine. on moonlight
boat tours and long walks.
People who say love at first
sight docs not exist, have not
been at the right place with
the right person!
Saying goodbye was very
difficult, but Jerry had to go
back to Edmonton and I had
my job and life in the
Netherlands. We promised to
write. So for the next three
year we wrotc and travelled
back and forth. In June 1984,
we were married in my
homctown of Denekamp in
Holland. From all over the
world I met and married a
guy who brought me back to
where 1 lived as a child.
Chance? I don't think so!
Romans 5:1 reads:
"Therefore since we have
been justified through faith,
we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus
Christ." In the end we can't
base our life on feelings but
we must go by faith in God
and each other. God never
promised us a bed of roses.
But he did say in Phillipians
4:3 "I can do all things
through Christ who gives me
strength." That's what we
base our love, marriage and
commitment to each other
on. It's God who brings us,
binds us and keeps us togeth-
er.

St. James Separate School, Grade one students toured the Post
Office Friday. Each student distributed their own valentine for
their parents. Getting the chance to cancel their own stamp is
Travis Loughnane, left, and Jessie Flanagan. The students then
placed the valentine's in their mailbox and learned all about
post office procedure. (Fitton photo)

Norman and Ethel Turrell
Norman and Ethel Turrell
were married in 1941.
He said the best thing he
ever did was to marry Ethel.
They both agree the secret
of a lasting marriage is mutu-
al trust.

My wife and I first met in
Northern Ireland when she
and three other WRENs
(Womens Royal Naval
Reserve) came to our radar
station.
I was asked by our flight
sergeant to tell them every-
thing I knew about radar.
1 immediately fell for the
cute, rosy-cheekcd one, and
the rest is history.
After, while I was shipped
overseas to three different
countries, we always kept up
a great correspondence.
Finally I was being shipped
home and this young
Yorkshire rose and I were
married in York and eventu-
ally got back to Canada and
set up a permanent home.
A perfect situation. We had
six children and I considered
each one a valentine from
Dinah.
I have enough wonderful
memories of them that 1
could write a book.

What is love?
A Valentines poem front a
resident who wanted to
remain anonymous.
The northern lights shone
bright above
I asked myself "Oh what is
love
Is there a pattern it must
follow?
Without it would our live
be hollow?

at the Seaforth Nursing
Home.
Ethel and Norm both
worked at the A and P but
not at the same store.
Then Norm got transferred
to the store whe.re Ethel
worked in Weston Ontario.
His first day he was work-
ing at the front of the store. "I
saw this young blond lady
come flying through the door
her coat was flying wide
open like wings.
"She was about ten feet
away and the thought struck
me that this was the girl I was
going to marry."
That was 57 years ago:
"and it was the best thing I
ever did."
