Beloved wife of Glenn Kilmer. Dear mother of Janice Kay, Hamilton. Loving grand- mother of Anthony Kay and his wife Delphine, Brampton; and Graham Kay, Montreal. Doreen (Spain) was born on November 7. 1907 in Seaforth. Ontario. the daughter of 'the late John C. Spain and Margaret Ellen (Nixon) Spain. Doreen was predeceased by a sister Erma Essig, Port Dover, a brother William Spain. Cambridge and a halt -broth- er Dale Nixon, Seaforth. Survived by two sisters, Florence and her husband Jerry Fischer. Thorndale, and Dorothy and her husband Harry Grab, Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews. Doreen graduated from Seaforth Collegiate and Galt Collegiate Institute. She was in the 1927 graduating class of the London Normal School. This was followed by teaching in Victoria County, Brant County, Norfolk County. Elgin County, Essex County. Sandwich South (Windsor), Ancestor and in secondary schools, in Brantford. 'Those Were the Years". published by Doreen. told the story of her educational career covering thirteen Ontario schools from the one -roomed back conces- sion schools to the state-of-the-art Brantford secondary schools. Doreen was a member of the Canadian Teachers Federation rep- resenting Canadian teachers at The World Conference of Teachers it+t Washington, D.C.; Stockholm. Sweden: Rio de Janiero, Brazil; and Paris, France. Doreen was a found- ing member and assistant -curator of the Westfield Pioneer Village. Rockton, Ontario from 1960 until 1971, and assisted in establishing endowment funds for the Westfield Heritage Centre, the Bachus Heritage Village, Pot Rowan. the Van Egmond Museum, Seaforth, and the Aylmer and District Museum. Aylmer, Ontario. Doreen was an active participant in church life at the Hartford Baptist Church, United Churches in Vienna. Port Burwell and Essex. and lastly at the Farringdon Independent Church in Brantford. She was an enthusiastic genealogist, publishing iwo large volumes of her patemal and mater- nal ancestry, one from Ireland and one from Denmark. Friends were received at the Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre, 88 Brant Avenue, Brantford, on Thursday, January 1, 1998, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service was held in the chapel on Friday, January 2, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. offlcated by the Reverend Jde Ounkenon and the Reverend John Buchwald.
