St. Columban in the early
'80s and creation of the town-
ship crest were two things
that stood out in his mind as
major accomplishments of
Hibbert council during his
time.
McPhail said he could
never forget the day he was
first nominated for public
office and he added most peo-
ple would remember exactly
where they were on that day
as well. He was nominated on
Nov. 22, 1963• the day U.S.
President John F. Kennedy
was assassinated in Dallas.
Texas.
Noting he had innumerable
fond memories of time spent
in the Staffa Hall while on
Hibhert council. he said he
hoped the hall would stay a
part of the ward for the bene-
fit of the community.
Following the meeting. a
light luncheon was served
with many scrapbooks high-
lighting life in Hibbert avail-
able for examination.
Organizers
pleased with
season
Attendance for this past
season at the Blyth Festival
was 28.535. or 65 per cent
of capacity.
The hoard of directors of
the Blyth Centre for the Arts
termed the 1997 season an
"artistic success" with a
budget deficit less than pro-
jected. when it reported to
the annual general meeting
on Dec. 11. - V
"The actual operating
deficit on the season was
5229.1 1 2. which was '5800
less than was budgeted.- a
Festival press release states.
"Last February. atter
endorsing the season as pro-
posed by artistic director
Janet Amos. the Blyth
Festival received news of a
more severe cut than
expected from the Ontario
Arts Council and. being too
late to change its plans. the
hoard of directors took the
unusual step of approving a
budget projecting .a 329.112
deficit."
A successful tour of
Barndanree Lite' to
Shelburne in September
had attendance of 75 per
cent.
" Janet.s last season was a
worthy culmination of the
four mind -bending years
she's spent restoring Blyth
as a vibrant and stable the-
atre.. new artistic director
Anne Chislet reported to the
annual meeting.
