Entitlement deadline
BY IRISH WILKINSON
CLINTON - Parents across
Huron County have been
e.i cn until the middle of
January to file a claim for the
strike compensation that
could see up to SW(N) added to
their family accounts.
The entitlement. which was
promised by the provincial
go%ernnlent in October. will
.plow any parent .whose ele-
mentary school child was
'absent from class because of
the work stoppage to claim
day for the duration of
the alk -out.
Paul Carroll. director of
education for the .Huron
County. Board of Education
.HCBEI. stated that unlike
the original announcement.
elementary school parents do
not have to show proof that
they paid for day care during
the walk -out.
'.All the hoard) has to do in
terms of policing it is to make
sure there is only one entitle-
ment per faintly." Carroll stat-
ed. adding that parent's of
public school elementary
children can claim S36I) for
the nine days their teachers
Were out of the classroom.
He; noted. however, that the
compensation for secondary
school students. which
amounts to j -hill for the two
weeks. IN much more restnc-
tiyc i'his entitlement. Carroll
continued. will only apply to
exceptional students who
required some type of special
care over the 10 days their
educators were on strike.
The director added that the
torn[s tor both elementary
and secondary school stu-
dents, which the hoard was
downloading (III the Internet
Friday. should he in parents'
hands soon.
"The tornis are on their way
to the schools." he stated.
Financial Services
Administrator Glenn Lamh
said that once the parents fill
out the required information.
which must he submitted on
or before Jan. 16. thty are to
return thein to the schools.
Following that, staff from the
schools will send them hack
to the HCBE.
Lamb added that the hoard
office will then process the
applications. and get the
money out to parents as
quickly as they can.
-'it is certainly not going to
he overnight." Lamh stated.
adding it is his hope that once
the hoard receives the appli-
cations from the schools that
it will not take more than a
week or so to process them at
their end.
Carroll added that hc. too.
wasn't sure on the turn
around time. but stated .that
the board wanted this done as
quickly as possible.
"We'll do our best to get the
cash flowing as quickly as we
can." he said.
The director stated that one
way the hoard is helping to
ensure this happens is by giv-
ing out charter bank money
orders instead of cheques.
which he said will allow the
board to "process them more
quickly."
However. for some parents.
it still won't he soon enough.
The director noted that
although reaction from the
community to the govern-
ment's plan has been mixed,
there has been a group of peo-
ple who "want it. and want it
now"
Carroll stated that there
have also been calls from
people who "expressed their
revulsion on the concept" and
refused to take the money.
Beyond that, he continued.
there are also people who
would like to know how to
donate the money hack to the
schools to help pay for sup-
plies and programs. which
Carroll stated they can do if
they please.
"That's something that is
(the parent's) decision." he
said.
The director added that he
hasn't done all of the calcula-
tions regarding how much the
entitlements could cost the
hoard. He noted. however,
that directors from other
hoards have done the math
and found the pay outs to he
slightly in excess of the teach-
ers' salanes saved from the
strike.

Q. The day my mother died. the doctor asked for permis-
sion to do an autopsy. 1 said, "No!" I've since wondered if
that was a purely selfish decision. What do you think?
A. There are many reasons why a physician may ask for an
autopsy. Establishing the cause of death is one and to reveal
associated conditions is another. Answers to these questions
can t I i facilitate the gneving process. i2) contnhute to medical
science and 13) help the family understand the illness. Each
.ase is an individual one and each family must decide how
important these answers are to them. '
