Glimpses of life in
Victorian days in Canada
from The Huron Expositor
and I-,ir 'reds of other com-
mun, gapers across the
country. can be found in a
newly published book with
the strange title: Four -Foot
Cucumbers. Juvenile
Delinquents & Frogs from
the Sky' - Snippets of Life in
Victorian Canada.
The authors. married couple
Crystal Fulton and Glen C.
Phillips. of London. each
hold graduate degrees in his-
tory from the University of
Western Ontario and "share a
deep and unfailing passion
for Canada's pas:. present
and future." according to
cover notes.
There are many colourful
quotes throughout this book.
including the lone representa-
tion from Seaforth. (1 can't
giye away the passage but
can tell you it has something
to do with the consumption-
of
onsumptionof alcohol).
This hook is the inaugural
title of Cheshire Cat Press, an
undertaking of Fulton and
Phillips. which some may be
happy to know "was grateful-
ly researched. written. and
published without the aid of
any .kind of public grant
whatsoever" - maybe a trend
that other aspiring artists and
authors will have to follow.
The sense of Victorian life
is conveyed well through
small chapters with common
themes like "A Dangerous
World" which tells stories of
accidents and mishaps not so
common in today's world.
There's a lot of horse -related
injuries and incidents of poi-
soning as well.
The chapter on medicine
makes you wonder how they
survived through those years.
In hindsight it was like.doc-
tors were just experimenting.
The strong influence Of the
church came across more fre-
quently in the pages of
Victorian newspapers as the
"Piety and Morality" section
shows.
The two common vices
alcohol and tobacco have a
chapter each reporting on
their downfalls and dangers.
You can read About winters
hack then and find out if they
really were worse - for
whether that was because
there were no motorized
snowplows and snowblow-
ers ).
There's lots of interesting
facts from the over 250 dif-
ferent papers scanned from
coast to coast.
It's also comforting to
know that mistakes in the
paper aren't a product of our
modern time. A passage trom
the Alberton Pioneers from
Novemher.8. 1876 reads:
"Owing to some cause Or the
other. the Pioneer of last
week went abroad with sev-
eral typographical errors. In
one place. "obscure" farmers
were made to read "obscene"
farmers. We will endeavor to
he more guarded in the
future."
