Board who took part in the provincial testing last spring. Your results were well above the provincial average. This shows that math, reading and writing are indeed alive and being taught in our schools. Congratulations also to the primary teachers who obvi- ously not only taught the basics but taught their students how to apply the basics in order to solve problems and produce quality results. The hue and cry of all the nay -sayers regarding the provincial testing was that it was totally foreign to class- room practice and did not get at the basics. Well, something right must have been going on 0 in the classrooms. The stu- 116 dents did us proud and yes, primary teachers did also. uality teaching throughout the primary division (Gr. 1, 2 and 3) the Gr. 3 stu- dents and they were able to rise to the test. I do hope the public is aware that the design of the Gr. 3 provincial test and its purpose to get a clear picture of teaching and learning was determined, well before the Harris government gained power. Hopefully Bert Johnson and Helen Johns take the time to study the test itself and its results. There are always areas for improvement but lets not tear apart an education system with so many strengths. Teachers know what areas need improvement. They also recognize they are not teach- ing in an environment or cul- ture similar to 20-30 years ago. Trust the teachers! They are professionals with a voca- tion dedicated to the teaching of students who will shape and build our tomorrows. Margaret M. Rowland RR 1, Dublin Tanis Vandermokn of the Seaforth area received an honourable mention for her poem A Poppy in the Wind in the junior (12 -years -old and under) poetry category of the 30th annual Dorothy Shoemaker Literary Awards. Twenty-nine winning entries were chosen by the judge of the competition, Welwyn Wilton Katz, from the 550 submissions received. The awards began in 1967 as a Centennial project of Kitchener's Public Library. They are named after Miss Dorothy Shoemaker, former chief librarian, who endowed them last year PHOTO BY DAVID SCOTT REPAIRS TO GYM WALL - The Seaforth District High School (SDHS) gymnasium wall is currently undergoing repairs to strengthen it after some buckling occurred.
