The blue spruce on the lawn was lit, and hot - mulled cider and cookies were later available inside, as was Santa Claus for the children. St. Columban's current bal- ance in the diocesan loan fund was given as $18,424.52. Jansen said the parish was also responsible for $623 of cluster expenses per month. He said envelopes (collec- tion) have dwindled from 97 to 37 since the start of the year. A parishioner in the audi- • ence clarified this later, indi- cating 97 is the total ,number of envelopes given out, but the "actual" tailing off is less dramatic, more like 45 envelopes to 37. Fr. Del Ciancio cautioned that he would not like to see any capital campaign, were parishioners to decide on a big ticket item, say a new church, cut into the existing collections required for clus- ter responsibilities. "Operating must go on," he said. Larry Brennan, business administrator of the Diocese of London, reported the gap between expenditures and receipts in St. Columban Parish has been getting wider in the past four years, with expenditures going up the fastest. In 1996 operating expendi- tures were $83,706 against receipts of $74,992. The respective comparable figures for 1995 he presented in chart form were $83,3)0 ($71,470); 1994 - $83,046 ($81,750); and 1993 - $85,213 ($83,447). The numbers reflect a "financial problem," the busi- ness administrator comment- ed, but one that was not nec- essarily "grave." `DON'T RUSH' "Don't feel rushed," he cau- FINE FURNITURE TU AND FLOOR COVERINGS • .74 ALBT , fi'L N ... *2950 The organizers of the Peter Flanagan Memorial Novice Hockey Tournament wish to acknowledge and thank the following for their generous support of the toumament.... "There is nothing the matter with feeling frustrated and angry." He repeated the same thing he said in September; the diocese has no hidden agenda and does not seek to dictate an answer or solution. Anne Murray and Mary Ann Feeney of the parish council reviewed trends with- in the structure of the Roman Catholic Church since 1993, stemming from a diocesan report that noted population decline in rural areas and a shortfall of priests, which has led to a greater emphasis on the policy of clustering parishes. They also reported that about two-thirds of the current church buildings within the diocese are more than 50 years old. Mary Ryan and Matt Claessens, current chair of the parish council also gave an overview of tin history of the faith in St. Columban, and some of the challenges it has withstood in its 165 years. Tension was evident in the question and answer period that followed "the facts" and various presentations, with the sentiment that St. Columban must come togeth- er most evident, at the very CONTINUED on page 6 Seaforth District High School :,apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the error in last week's paper.
