The Huron Expositor, 1997-11-19, Page 16tri -11R /11 011 £RPOMT'OR, IS,.. Ilearrnimber 1* IIS/ Councillor questions remuneration for volunteer committee Cozen. Michael Hak raised a question about council- lors' paying themselves and not volunteers on commit- tees before council approved October remuner- ation at last Tuesday night's meeting. He noted two councillors, Brian Ferguson and Heather Robinet, charged for attending Inst month's meet- ing of the community action committee but two other councillors who attended didn't. Coun. Hak felt council should clarify whether its members got paid or not for being on this committee "so everybody's the same" and it doesn't become an issue. The community action committee arose on its own, with various prominent area volunteers and councillors as members. Coun. Robinet said she had attended the October meeting of the committee on the request of Mayor Irwin Johnston. Town consolidates reserves less $2,494.58 "due from At its Nov. 4 meeting, Seaforth Council, accepted a consolidated reserve fund from administrator Jim Crocker, and approved the transfer of funds in desig- nated property grants and LACAC services accounts to the Seaforth heritage trust fund account. Crocker said consolidation makes the reserves "more manageable." The town's consolidated reserve funds (Jan. 1/97) including 1997 budget transfers totals $243,269.57, Perth Federation Andy DeVries, who oper- ates a dairy and broiler farm at RR 2 Atwood, was acclaimed president as the Perth County Federation of Agriculture named its execu- tive and township directors at its annual general meeting Oct. 30. Alvin Dow and Dave Vandewalle were chosen as Hibbert Township directors for the coming term, Karen McLagan and Cecil Rose for Logan and Willy Keller, Bruce Morris and Dave McKay for Fullarton. town," leaving a bank bal- ance of S190,774.99. The balances of these vari- ous reserves, consolidated into 12 from the town's original 19, as circulated to council by administrator Crocker, are: fire services $20,277.32; general govern- ment services, $43,066.54; human resources $65,000.40 (ie. sick leave, insurance - short-term and long-term dis- ability); transportation ser- vices, $46,814.09; environ- mental services, $19,454.81; recreation services, $7,423.67; business develop- ment and retention services, $9,529.93; library services, $1,502.43; arena services, $4,885.62; designated prop- erty grants, $6,878.60; LACAC services, $857.80; and miscellaneous capital expenses. The 19 reserve funds Seaforth had before consoli- dating them were: fire pumper, police services, con- tracted services, public works, miscellaneous, sewer, industrial, office equipment, sick Nave, streetlights, recre- ation, library capital, eco- nomic development, landfill, mainstreet, designated prop- erty grants, ABCA trees and fish, arena, LACAC. Thank You, Sill De 'sag Coun. Ferguson was not at last 'lliesday night's council mooting. Cozen. John Ball said pay- ment might foster -consis- tency" of attendance, and without it the committee's reliance on strictly volun- teers might ked to deterio- ration, similar to what has happened with the patios and recreation committee in town. Council eliminated remu- neration for volunteers on such committees (another one is LACAC) as a down- sizing/cost-control measure before doing its budget in 1996. The recreation committee has been having difficulty attracting and keeping vol- unteers since then. Payment approved At its regular meeting last Tuesday night, Scaforth Council approved the follow- ing amounts for October meeting attendance: Mayor Irwin Johnston, $290 (four meetings attended not charged for); Reeve William Bennett, $150; Deputy -reeve William Teall, $195; Couns. John Ball, $285; Brian Ferguson, $240; Michael Hak, $195; Heather Robinet, $330. SINCERE THANKS to the . ratepayers of Tuckersmith for your support at the polls on November 10th. Bob Broadfoot "Others volunteer," deputy -reeve Bill n.all said. "For us to charge is unfair to them." Deputy -clerk Cathy Garrick said the community action committee has been meeting every month recently, but will probably meet more often in future, for perhaps the next six to nine months. Last Tuesday was the last meeting of the current coun- cil's term. It approved October's remuneration a, submitted by councillors, but decided to refer the matter to the new council's striking committee.
