Bennett steps down after nearly
quarter century of politics in Seaforth
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL

After 24 years in local
politics here, Reeve Bill
Bennett attended his final
meeting of Seaforth Council
last Tuesday night.
He did not run in last
week's municipal elections.
In October, Coun. Brian
Ferguson was acclaimed as
Seaforth's new reeve, a
position Bennett has held
since 1986. Our new reeve
takes office with the inau-
gural meeting of the new
council at the start of next
month.
"I always said I'd stay on
council until all the roads
were paved," Bennett said.
"I think they (the people)
get sick of looking at old
faces."
Bennett reflected he'd
"gone through six mayors"

town, when thc advertise-
ment hc ran reflected his
love of horses and read:
"I'm at the post."
Bennett said he has missed
few meetings since then,
that he could count the ones
hc mi m his fingers.
He ttt.mkcd council and
particularly town staff for
co-operation and support
over all the years, and
recalled his first year on
council when circumstance
led to him becoming chair-
man of the arcna board
within six months.
He said the town's arena
then was a far cry from
today. It was later con-
demned.
The reeve also laughed
when he remembered the
time he was on the town's
police committee but the

town had no police, because
all the officers resigned.
Council has progressed
from those times, when it
was day-to-day, he noted.
Now it is looking ahead
with five-year plans.
"I could always get along
with people well," Reeve
Bennett said.
"I certainly like this town.
It's a great town."
The reeve represents the
town on county council.
After last Tuesday night's
meeting adjourned, council
did a little socializing and
presented him with a tasty
cake, with icing made to
look like Town Hall.
Important to carry on study after three years

said working together with
the Seaforth BIA is impor-
tant. "They do a, lot of good
work."
"Once this study is done it's
important to carry it on.
There shouldn't be an end to
this. It's not a study we're
going to implement and put
on thc shelf," said Crocker.
"This is something to be
proud of," said Nichol. "The
political boundaries may
change in a year or two but
Seaforth and its trading area
shouldn't change."
The core group, or task
force, which has been meet-
ing since thc spring, said it
was important to let the pub-
lic know all members are vol-
unteers and costs for the pro-
ject are being kepi to an
absolute minimum. There
will be a cost for the initial
mail -outs but no other major
expenses are foreseen at this
point. It is estimated that the

Abstainers shouldn't start drinking for good health
"Abstainers are advised not
w start drinking to protect
themselves from heart dis-
ease," the Huron County
Health Unit warns in last
week's press release concern-
ing new "low-risk drinking
guidelines."
These guidelines, from a
coalition of public health
agencies, "advise people to
drink no more than two
drinks on any one day. Men
should limit themselves to 14
drinks a week, and women
should drink no More than
nine." •
