Co-ordination still isn't
appontly my forte.
There are now a few
women in town who can
vouch for this. These begin-
ning sloggers had been hav-
ing classes for a couple of
weeks.
They start in October and
run until April.
Instructor Sherry McCall
everybody's got the
in them, it's just bring -
out. She says the
younger you get into this
clogging, the better you can
be as you get older - sort of
like golf, which I am also
useless at.
I tried to follow Sherry's
feet, and apparently blew out
some of my brain synapses in
the process.
She can dance faster than I
can think.
That's without the music.
I was tipping when I should
have been tapping, and trip-
ping when I should have
been "rock -stepping," all to a

rs call this fun and a good workout
peppy little tune called
Adalida by George Strait.
I didn't fall down and hurt
myself though.
Let us simply say my "dou-
ble -step" is not a thing of
great grace and unmatched
beauty, and leave it at that.
Thank heavens us beginners
didn't get into the "butt
basic" or "Charleston" or
"cowboy" or "outhouse" or
"slur brush" steps.
1 wouldn't mind trying the
"rocking chair" though.
SMOKEY MOUNTAINS
McCall has been teaching
sloggers here for seven years.
She says clogging came from
the Smokey Mountain region
of the United States and is
easier to learn than step -
dancing, which is something
she's been doing since she
was two.
Clogging isn't the same
thing as line -dancing.
I found that out.
But all these various kinds
of traditional and country
dancing are enjoying a boom
thanks to the phenomenally
ome
successful Mundane* show.
which has given them a "hip"
and modern aura.
RiverTIance, which originat-
ed in Ireland. was sold out in
Toronto this summer but
McCall has tickets for next
year.
In any case, Sherry had to
tum down about 30 kids for
beginners clogging in
Seaforth this fall it is getting
so popular.
The young ones take a lot
of one-on-one instruction.
Her beginners class is on
Thursday nights. The' more
experienced ones get at it
'Iliesdays.
About a half-dozen of these
women, the most advanced,
have been clogging since she
started giving classes.
They are in the Cavan
Cloggers, who put on exhibi-
tions but don't compete.
They do it for fun, McCall
says.
And the exercise.
GOOD FOR LUNGS
She figures its better than
jogging because it is easier
on the knees. Clogging is an
excellent cardio -vascular
exercise.
And you don't have to be
young. Some of our local
clog ers are well beyond
middle age.
The peppy music mates
you forget how hard it is,
once you grasp the basics.
It can be hard on the old
boom box though. McCall
said last Thursday she has
broken three of theportable
sound systems so rants
clogging season.
What else did I discover?
The Carry On Cloggers are
out of Clinton, and there is
another clogging group in the
area at Stratford.
Clogging shoes aren't the
same as tap-dancing shoes.
The latter have smaller heels,
and most clogging shoes are
white.
Our local sloggers are
putting on a variety show
next spring. Details haven't
been finalized yet but it will
probably. be at the local high
school. I'll be the one behind
the camera.
Don't look for me in the
show.
1 can't keep up with these
ladies.
I still have my doubts you
can teach some old boulders
any new tricks. •
Call it - the agony of de
feet.
(Stay tuned next week
when "Scoop" Ores brain
surgery a go.)
