AgrlThlture supports 20,000
jobs in Huron County

Farming remains the back-
bone of Huron County sup-
porting 20,000 jobs, accord-
ing to the study on the eco-
nomic impact of agriculture
in the county released at a
press conference last Friday
at the Huron Federation of
Agriculture (HFA) in
Vanastra.
"You can look at it another
way. In Huron County we
produce $1.5 million a day
(in agricultural produce),"
said Bill Wallace of RR 4
Seaforth, chair of the HFA
economic impact committee.
Perth is second with $1 mil-
lion a day (or $365 million a
year). Huron more than dou-
bles Nova Scotia's annual
total of $250 million in farm
produce.
The 20,000 job number is
double from last year's esti-
mate of 10,000 jobs in agri-
culture and related employ-
ment. But University of
Guelph professor Harry
Cummings says he was "con-
servative" with his estimates
from the first half of the
report last year. And that the
1997 study looked at "direct,
indirect and induced impact"
of agriculture on the county's
economy.
Wallace says the main
thrust of "phase two" of the
study was the re-examination
of numbers including the
induced benefits of agricul-
ture. (Eg. Salaries of farmers,

impact of their spending on
the economy).
"The employment data con-
sists of approximately 4,400
jobs on farms (from 1996
numbers); an estimation of
11,000 plus in ag.-related
jobs and another 4,000
approximately in the induced
sector," said Cummings.
He conducted studies in the
townships of Stanley,
McKillop and Morris to
obtain numbers on the
"induced" jobs from agricul-
ture. "In each township there
are approximately 300 to 400
strictly agriculture jobs. You
can see the education, retail
and health jobs are there
obviously in support of the
agricultural area."
He used the example of a
plumbing and heating busi-
ness to illustrate ag.-related
business and induced effects.
"Looking at plumbing and
heating services. A farm has
to have water. A farm busi-
ness is then supporting this
plumbing business. The
plumber has employees, parts
supplies, finance, insurance,
advertising in the local paper,
vehicle possibly bought in
Huron County and getting
repaired in Huron County.
The farm economy is leading
back to main street," said
Cummings.
"The employees of the
plumbing business use the
local health services, their
children go to school, they
buy from main street.
