II -TME HURON EXPOSITOR. October 20, 1907
Objects to expression of logic
Dear Editor:
In my opinion Heather
Robinet showed a lapse in
judgement when she submit-
ted a letter commenting on
Dave Scott's candidacy for
mayor.
I hold no animosity towards
Heather but I believe she
entered the public opinion
forum with a huge conflict of
interest.
I don't believe anyone,
however honest, could write
a fair letter criticizing Dave
while holding a seat on coun-
cil beside his opponent in the
race. The hats of political
critic in the town newspaper
and town councillor just
should not be worn at the
same time. This type of
logic, of course, I gained by i
reading Heather's own letter.
It's not her logic I object to
so much, oh no, just her
expression of it. In fact let's
extend her logic further than
just criticizing the editor of
the Expositor. Likewise, no
one with a full-time career
should aspire to be mayor
since he or she will bring too
many biases and conflicts of
interest to the job.
An entrepreneur, for exam-
ple, would be enslaved to the
concerns of commerce and so
the council would suffer
accusations of being in the
hip pocket of business. A
farmer or teacher might find
it impossible not to use privi-
leged council information to
her or his advantage.
Again, to extend Heather's
reasoning, being a business
owner or farmer or teacher
sn't what you do, it's who
you are. Any career at all,
actually, should be seen as a
24 -hour -day pursuit that
excludes any other meaning-
ful contribution to the com-
munity, such as public ser-
vice.
Returning to Dave Scott
specifically for a moment, he
has many other strikes
against him besides an
alleged conflict of interest.
He is energetic and full of
good ideas for the town. No
one wants new ideas brought
to council, that just compli-
cates things for the old guard.
Plus his job as editor has
brought him into contact with
many people in the commu-
nity and made him well-
acquainted with their con-
cerns. Why would the people
of Seaforth want an
approachable, responsive
mayor?
Sincerely yours,
Paul Ciufo

Legion launching annual Poppy Campaign
Dear Editor:
For many years the people
.of Seaforth and arca have
been most generous in con-
tributing to the annual Poppy
Campaign of Branch 156 of
the Royal Canadian Legion.
Funds raised from the pub-
lic are held in trust in a sepa-
rate account and do not form
any part of branch finances.
The amount collected in the
1996 campaign was $5657.86
with expenses of $2,010.08.
The Poppy Trust Fund is a
reserve from which assis-
tance can be given to needy
veterans, their dependents
and the widows and children
of deceased ex -service per-
sonnel.
We trust that the local citi-
zens will continue to lend
their strong support to the
Peer support
groups forming
in every town
in Iifdi '
Dear Editor:
Understanding and supp
are essential components
establishing working pe
support groups.
The consumer initiative h
established five peer suppo
groups in Huron count
These groups offer suppo
encouragement, fricndsh
and leisure opportunities
those with mental heal
problems. Bringing thes
groups together is our ne
step.
Anyone who
experiencing mental hcalt
issues can support th
continuation of these group
through their presence. Yo
will gain friendship, a sons
of belonging and self estee
as you support others.
The community can hal
decrease stigma h
developing an awareness o
mental health and a
appreciation of wellnes
through literature and dircc
contact.
By understanding how
difficult it is for these people
to feel empowered, we can
help consumers believe in
themselves by promoting the
work of mutual aid in their
own recovery.
If you want to offer your
service as a volunteer or if
you know someone with
mental health problems,
please refer them to the
consumer group in their arca.
There is no cost to join and if
transportation is a problem,
we will arrange a way to get
you there.
You do not have to
experience isolation and
loneliness. There arc people
who care how you feel. Takc
a risk...rcach out and offer
your presence, understanding
and support.
Your "helping hands"
support can he given by
volunteering your timc to
these groups.
The local group in Seaforth
meets every Wednesday, 7-9
p.m. at St. Thomas Anglican
