Workshop
on abuse
of elderly
Another workshop on abuse
of the elderly is scheduled for
Clinton on Nov. 12 from
12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
The Huron County elder
abuse working group, a sub-
group of the Huron Perth
District Health Council's
long term planning commit-
tee has been active since July
1996, last week's press
release states, meeting on a
monthly basis to address
strategics for the prevention
of abuse including education
and public awareness,
enpowerment of older per-
sons and advocacy.
A community workshop
was held a year ago for those
who work with older adults.
Since then, the working
group has completed the draf
of a protocol on elder abuse
for Htiron County service
providers.
Next month's workshop
will focus on a review of
these materials, including
suggestions for improve-
ments from participants, as
well as provide an opportuni-
ty for service providers to
discuss specific situations.
Presentations will include
information about determin-
ing capacity and Arden
Farrow from the Ontario
Provincial Police will discuss
her role as abuse issue co
ordinator.
Pre -registration is requested
by the end of October, by
contacting Mary at the DHC
(519-348-4498),
Bider abuse can take physi-
cal, psychological forms or
involve material/financial
neglect, the working group's
press release notes, and it has
many definitions, including
"any act or omission by a
person in a position of trust -
a friend, family member,
neighbour or paid caregiver -
which causes harm to a
senior."
