Belt blitz
We arc in the midst of a
aesthete campaign all blitz.
Wm in Huron and Al across
Omaha.
It flan the first weekend
of this month and will be
emphasized until this weak -
end.
"Seatbeits save lives" is the
message that police, health
and injury prevention profes-
sionals are trying to drill into
people's heads.
The Huron County Health
Unit estimates 5,000 lives
have been saved in this
province since seatbelt legis-
lation was introduced 20
years ago. h adds "usage has
risen over 20 per cent, from
71 per cent in 1976 to over
92 per cent" last year.
Ontario Provincial Police
are conducting a seatbelt
compliance count that
includes a check for safe
infant/child c ar scats. "Motor
vehicle occupants who are
not buckled in will he
coed."
Student peer mentors from
high schools in Goderich and
Wingham held a challenge on
Saturday, keeping track of the
number of drivers wearing or
not wearing their belts.
During the same challenge
last year, Goderich scored 70
per cent and Wingham 67 per
cent.
Rural Response for Healthy
Children and the Huron
County Health Unit are pro-
moting infant/child care seat
safety too with public infor-
mation displays and a volun-
teer training day Oct.16.

New board
needs name
The local education
improvement committee for
the recently amalgamated
district public school boards
of Huron and Perth counties
is having a couple of con-
tests - to name the new
board, and to develop a
board logo and motto.
For lack of a better name,
right now the new board is
officially called District
School Board No. 8.
The Huron and Perth
boards merge at the start of
January.
The deadline for submis-
sions is in little more than a
week, on Oct. 23.
"Students. staff, parents.
school council members and
other community council
members are invited to sub-
mit proposals for the name
the board contest." accord-
ing to a press release. "Only
students are eligible for the
board logo and motto con-
test."
Submissions are to be sent
to the office of the director
of education at either the
Huron board in Clinton or
Perth board in Stratford.
