DHC office likely to relocate BY ANDY BADER SSP News Staff After much lobbying two years ago, of Mitchell could very well find itself without the Huron Perth District Health Council office. A transition team working toward amalgamating the Huron Perth DHC with the Grey -Bruce District Health Council met last Tuesday for the first time, and one of its first items of business is iden- tifying a new office site. Since the new region is so wide geographically, the tran- sition team members are seeking a place more central, leaving Mitchell's office on St. George St. apparently out of the picture. The old Mitchell Automatic Bowling Lanes had been ren- ovated to facilitate the Huron Perth DHC, once they were officially named the office site in October of 1995.. "We don't want to close off any opportunities at this point in time," said George Stock, acting executive director with the Huron Perth DHC, "but we are looking for a more central location." Stock said the DHC is a year -and -a -half into a five- year lease with the building owners, Norm and Donna Wilding, and he didn't know His pumpkins CONTINUED from page 1 with a good spot. McGregor had that on the McBride land, which provided hearty soil, a nice windbreak and was just far enough off the highway to keep away some of the gawk- crs. But one question remains. Why? "It's just something to do," said McGregor, who's on shift work and was able to spend days with his pumpkin. "It's something I wanted to do years ago." His first try grew to a not - disrespectful 100 pounds, fol- lowed the next year by a 200 - what would happen if and when another office location is found. The office lease began March 1, 1996, and as of Friday, Donna Wilding said they hadn't been informed of any changes. "People have called this building fancy, but I think it's very, very practical," Stock said. "It's a nice place to work with superb meeting facilities. I certainly don't relish the thought of giving it up." The amalgamation of the two district health councils is to be completed by next March 31. The ministry of health has requested that, by mid-October, the six -member transition team recommend a preferred community in which to locate the amalga- mated office. The team is looking to locate in a town that is central to the new dis- trict (which stretches as far as Owen Sound, where the Grey -Bruce DHC offices are), has restaurants, overnight accommodation, social amenities and business sup- port services. The office must be 3,000-4,000 sq. ft. in area, be wheelchair accessible and have enough parking for 25- 30 vehicles. The new amalgamated DHC will have 20 mem- bers -10 from Huron and Perth, and 10 from Grey Bruce. Stock said the immedi- ate aim is to have four volun- teer members from each county—two providers and two consumers—as well as one municipal representative from each county. The transition process involves a "fairly quick and heavy work plan," Stock noted, but the two health councils are committed to continuing their health plan- ning functions. High priority is placed on hospital and health services planning and the first steps in the applica- tion of the rural and northern health policy. It is anticipated that the new council will build upon the planning to date in the two districts, and work towards the develop- ment of viable integrated health systems in the two cur- rent districts. "It's a very, very collabora- tive process since we [both districts] both have similar issues," Stock said. "There's no sense in mak- ing it more painful than it has to be." The transition team consists of equal representation from Huron Perth and Grey -Bruce: Co-chairs Deborah Campbell and Paul Eagleson, along with Pauline Diemert, Gerald Rogers, Sara Trainor and Jeff Wilbee. have grown bigger each year pounder, which he took to Pumpkinfest. That achievement paled a little when they set it down next to a 900 -pound pump- kin. Since, then his pumpkins have grown bigger each year. Winners at these events often receive big prize money and trips to larger competi- tions - which McGregor admits would be nice — but isn't the driving force. "If you go into it for the financial reward, you're going to be in for an awful jolt," he said. "Besides, I don't have that much invest- ed " C4TH LENTEN A I R F,S HALLOWEEN DANCE FRI.
