severe depression. Similarly
an imbalance in dopamine, a
chemical that passes mes-
sages between brain cells,
plays a big part in -schizo-
phrenia and also attention
deficit disorder.
The same double standard
can apply to treatment, she
said. People commonly
accept electro -shock in phys-
iotherapy or for cardiac
arrest, why not as readily as
, an infrequent "last resort" for
severe depression?
"We are not so supportive
of people with mental illness
as we should be," the doctor
said. "If we accept it for one
organ, why not another?"

Fall Tour
on Sunday
The annual "Fall Colour
Tour" at the Wawanosh
Valley Conservation Area is
on Sunday afternoon from 1
to 4, this year officially coin-
ciding with "Ontario Hiking
Day," dubbed "a day of cele-
bration to encourage people
to take to the trails and dis-
cover the joys and benefits of
walking and hiking."
Participants will be eligible
to enter a draw for a variety
of hiking -related prizes and
"if the weather cooperates,
two teams of horses will pro-
vide wagon rides through the
conservation area beginning
at 1:30 p.m.," according to a
press release from the
Maitland Valley Conserv-
ation Authority.
"Staff wilt be on hand to
provide information about
the property and answer
questions relating to the
changing colours of leaves,
and how plants and animals
prepare for winter."
Visitors can also walk on
their own if they wish.
The conservation area is
south of Belgrave (west of
Highway 4 on Conc. 6 /7 of
East Wawanosh Township)
and covers 420 acres, con-
taining hardwood forest, pine
ptantations and two small
wetlands.
only feel mental illness is
somehow "deserved" she
said, an attitude that probably
has roots in the middle ages
when the mentally il1 were
thought "possessed."
"My feeling is we have to
take away the mystery," Dr.
Rodney said. "Get away from
the blame.... Work at it.
"Why should you hang
your head because you have
to go in for treatment?"
NO STRINGS SUPPORT
Dr. Rodney said early inter-
vention, among other bene-
fits, translates in lower hospi-
talization rates and decreased
costs for the community,
which is the current direction
of public health care policy,
initiated by Ontario's NDP
government in 1993 and con-
tinued by the present
Progressive Conservatives.
This "community" and
caregivers would show wis-
dom by not shying away
from the mentally ill and rec-
ognizing that their needs are
identical to the physically ill
- "unconditional support the
way you do best," she said.
"A shoulder to cry on, or an
ear to listen."
Dr. Rodney said the recent
Graham report indicated that
of Ontario's present popula-
tion, about 38,000 people
suffer some form of mental
illness, or 2 1/2 per cent.
