Strike not to
compromise
safety of students
As teachers F across the
province prepare for a possi-
ble walk -out, the Huron
County Board of Education
(HCBE) is also working to
ensure whatever happens
between the government and
the educators does not com-
promise the safety of their
students.
Paul Carroll, director of
education for the board, stat-
ed that the board has been
having ongoing discussions
with the teachers federations
and union representatives to
prepare and recognize that "if
(a strike) does happen, our
first concern is with the safe-
ty of our students."
The director noted, there-
fore, that if a walk -out should
occur the board would move
very quickly to make sure
buses did not arrive at the
school with only picket lines
to greet the children.
"Our first plan will be to
shut down the transportation
system," Carroll stated.
tinuing "ongoing communi-
cations" with the unions, it is
his hope that if any action is
taken, the board will be able
to give parents and students
as much notice as possible.
The education director also
stated that in accordance with
the Education Act, the board
will "indicate to all of the
staff that if they choose to
participate they will be partic-
ipating in an illegal strike,"
and any teachers choosing to
walk out will not be paid for
that time.
Beyond that, he continued,
the board has little to do with
the ongoing discussion as the
unions have made it very
clear that their argument is
with the government, and not
with the HCBE.
