old frozen cow pie in the net,
as we soon found out, for-
wards with names we
couldn't pronounce at first
("Who cares, they all look
alike and play the same," we
said. "Machines with no
heart"), like Aleksandr
Yakushev and Valeriy
Kharlamov.
The Soviets soon got our
respect, lickity-split, nonat-

y had heart, and earned
a spot forever in ours.
In retrospect, the only
expert who was close to the
mark before this great series
began was the Sun 's sports
editor George Gross.
"Don't take the Soviet
National Team lightly," he
wrote. "They wouldn't have
agreed to this series if they
didn't think they had a fair
chance of winning some of
the games."
How right he turned out to
be.
YOU CAN'T GO BACK
Although the eighth and
deciding game of the "Super
Series" was as entertaining as
the sport can be it was not, as
new experts have deified it in
the last couple of weeks,
"The Greatest Hockey Game
of All Time."
That description covers a
lot of territory but the game
that would earn my nod for
that particular label was also
played in a September
between Team Canada and
the U.S.S.R., but only a
decade ago - at Copps
Coliseum in Hamilton.
It was the second game of
the Canada Cup final in
1987, which Team Canada
won in double overtime on a
goal by Mario "The
Magnificent" Lemieux,
assisted by Mr.Wayne
Gretzky, "The Great". They

Tennis team takes conference title
Seaforth District High
School's tennis squad won
the Huron -Perth team title a
week ago Monday at
Stratford.
The conference tournament
had been postponed the
Friday before because of rain.
Individually, Sean Ludwig
and Carali McCall captured
gold in mixed doubles and
Cheryl Thompson and Starla
Wick finished first in
women's doubles
The SDHS team was made
up of 15 tennis players and
racked up more points than
all the others, for instance
teams from Clinton,
Stratford, Enter, Wingham,
Listowel, Goderich, St.
Marys and Mitchell.
"We didn't get it without
some luck and hard work,"
said coach John Ball. "It was
quite a team effort."
Volunteer Hank Binnendyk
also helped coach the team.
Water exercise a fountain of youth?
Seaforth's Drusilla Leitch
was one of the more than 85
aquatic fitness instructors
from across Canada and the
United States to attend a
"state of the art" water train-
ing program at West Vaughan
Community Centre on Sept.
20 and 21.
The "Golden Waves" func-
tional fitness research pro-
gram showed that seniors,
aged 60 to 89 years,
decreased their physiological
or performance age," accord-
ing to information provided
by the program.
"'They felt and acted as if
they were 40 years old,'
observed Mary Sanders, of
the University of Nevada.
"This was not a bad out-
come for only three hours of
water exercise per week for a
four-month period."
Leitch 'says the Golden'
Waves program revealed that
water training will improve
upper body strength, func-
tional range of motion, bal-
ance and lower body
strength.
She was particularly
impressed "that this program
helped seniors improve their
abdominal strength and pos-
ture through stabilization
exercises."
Leitch teaches water fitness
classes at the Vanastra
Recreation Centre, and land-
based classes for the Seaforth
Recreation Department
"where she utilizes 'function-
al fitness' training on land in
her fitness is fun programs.

Anyway again- back to the
first Super Series, our best
versus their best, it was all set
up by a lawyer fellow called
Alan Eagleson, who has since
fallen into disrepute, and for
good reason. But it was the
wheeler-dealer, power -trip-
ping "Eagle" more than any-
body else who set this great
matchup up, and for that he
deserves the nation's eternal
gratitude.
He did more than talk and
fought fire with fire, pulling
it off, where others had tried
and all failed.
He helped give our game to
the world. Sold it as the great
spectacle it is.
In retrospect a quarter-cen-
tury later, Russian (and all of
Europe's) hockey has become
more like ours. And our
hockey has become more like
theirs.
And the game is better for
it, no matter what the experts
say.
