"Many of the letters con- tained similar admissions, some of even a more direct character. Mrs. Bond was at last discharged about a month ago, and then informed Melody she was going to Buffalo. A correspondence was kept up all the time to a few days ago; but, of course, as all letters had to be inspected by the gaoler, noth- ing occurred in them touch- ing on the murder, and they only breathe the affection and adoration he appears to have felt, prompted possibly, more by the hope of escape than any real regard. The corre- spondence only closed and the parties disclosed their hands, when the case was ready for trial. A few days before, the evidence against the parties thus accumulated was shown to Donovan, who immediately asked to be allowed to make a deposi- tion, with the wish, evidently, to protect himself. The first deposition he made was as follows: - "This is the statement of Thomas Donovan, made this 18th day of March, 1869, in relation to the murder of Nicholas Melady and Ellen Melady (his wife). - I believe that Thomas Melady, Alice Melady, and Mrs. Kehoe are aware of the murder of Nicholas Melady and Ellen Melady (his wife); and fur- ther. that I know Nicholas Melady was the murderer, or one of the murders." Great time at tractor draw Dear Editor: Once again the Agricultural Society of Seaforth has done it again. What a great day and evening, for their tractor elimination draw, supper and dance and a great time was enjoyed by all. "CONGRAT- ULATIONS" to the decora- tors who did inside'the arena, it was spectacular. Each and every one of the decorators deserves more than a medal (Thank you from us), it looked very beautiful. To those "Thoughtless People" who were so intent on removing the posters, recipes, etc., off the glass around the arena - PLEASE THINK (next time) of all the hard work the Ag. Society people went to, to make the arena look extra special for "you" and everyone else to enjoy. To all the people in and around Seaforth who neglect to buy a tractor ticket, to sup- port their own Ag. Society - how sad. Some day you, are going,to wish you had bought one. After eight years of buying tickets, "I3 & K" won a beautiful birdhouse and "Willemena & Girls" won two tires - very, very nice. To the Ag. Society, all its members, and its many,,many wonderful : helpers, thank you very much for a wonderful day, ggmod music, EXCEL- I,BNT FOOD„beautiful sur- roundings anfl wonderful people. Didn't observe any blood on the walls of any rooms except those of the kitchen.” THE MURDER Tdoasas McQo.ck - Saw his father-in-law last in Seaforth, the Tuesday previ- ous to the murder, at which time they made an appoint- ment to go up to Melady's un Sunday following, and went accordingly. "Witnesses here described the house as a large 1 1/2 storey, containing several rooms. On entering the house, his wife going ahead, saw blood as thick as it could be on the floor, in which tracks were quite plain, upon which witness remarked there must have been fighting there during the past night, and his wife wished him to go away, but he declined, and then went into the hall. where the body of Nicholas Melody was laying dead in his blood, with nothing but his shirt on. "Both then went out and gave the alarm. and got a neighbour named Nigh, and returned to the house. where they found the wife of Nicholas Melody by the bed in the bedroom also dead. The blood was thicker in the bedroom than in the hall and kitchen. Appeared as though the blood had been there some time. The wound on the old man was a bullet hole in the right temple. The old woman's head was split up, as if with an axe, a chair was also laying there broken. By this time Dr. Coleman and a number of neighbours were present." To Prisoners Counsel - Witness (McGuech) never quarelled with him. On the Sunday in question he got to the house in afternoon. Some of the doors were open and others on the 'latch. "The blood appeared to have flowed from the ibed- room into the kitchen. Didn't observe any 'blood on the walls of any rooms except those of the kitchen. From appearances of the tracks inferred them were more than one person present at the time of murder." Joseph Nigh - 'Lived near to the house of the late .old Melady. The ftrat he heard of the murder was when McGuech came and told him on Sunday 7th of June. "I saw the old man on the evening before and appeared to be well. Went to the house with McGuech and saw the bodies, laying on the floor. The feet of the two bodies lay towards one another. The body of the old man had a bullet hole in one of his tem- ples. Was a very large hole. Had nothing but his shirt on. "The old woman's head was smashed in, might have been dune either with an axe or club, both of which arti- cieS were laying on the floor as well as a broken gun. Articles were produced in court, though could not swear to them. When he saw she state of affairs, sont for the coroner. Saw a araban boa in the room. Didn't know whether there had boat a rob- bery or not. Saw signs of the murderers 'having got in at the cellar window." The trsoks of the murderers went west and south-west from the house, "part of the way it was as of stocking tracks up to a pile of wood by a potato patch, after which they appeared to be boot tracks." This tracing was done by him on Monday. The tracks on the floor were easi- ly to be seen. The most blood was in the bedroom. "I saw the prisoner's boots tried in the tracks. Conversed with the prisoner at the inqueat, when he said, that on the night of the murder they had 'been drinking pretty freely, and could not give a very good account as to where he was that night. Didn't recollect what the prisoner said about his father's marriage but knew he was unfavourable to it." To Prisoner's Counsel - "He was tuld that the boots were Donovan's.
