Pigeons have landed in Walton
don't 4,.,....._..__.
I don't know what you
think about pigeons or if you
think about pigeons at all but
I just met someone new in
town that happens to have
some very different pigeons.
On behalf of the Walton com-
munity I would like to wel-
come Yvonne and Don
Kitchener to our fair village.
After moving quite a few
times they have decided that
this is the place they want to
be. Walton, says Don is very
similar to the place he grew
up in. The place was called
Clairevillc which is the most
Northwestern•tip of Toronto.
When he was around 8 or 9
he raised pigeons. He had
tumblers, tipplers and regular
Karn pigeons. Now Don has
decided to get involved with
pigeons again and he now
has 20 Burmingham Roller
pigeons. He said that they are
wonderful to watch as they
do their acrobats in the air.
Right now the pigeons are
nesting and getting used to
their surroundings. These
pigeons will lay two eggs
every 18 to 20 days and usu-
ally just o e •of the chicks
will survive. Don says he still
has a lot to learn but looks
forward to it. Yvonne com-
mented that she has met a lot
of nice people since moving
in. She enjoys homemade
crafts of all sorts and she
designs knitting patterns.
Don likes to collect and
restore old Ford tractors.
Right now he has a 1939-9N,
1048-8N and a 1942-2N
tractor. He also in his spare
time, rebuilds air compres-
sors, paints cars, fixes up old
cars and trucks and docs car-
pentry work. I guess you
could say that he is a regular
"handy man".
School News: It was wind
down and wind up time for
the last two days of school.
Monday was the last half of

piano skills. The talent then
switched gears as Laura
Elligsen, Cassandra Banks

their little skit. Their message
was "do not fight". Taylor
Bennewies who is in junior
kindergarten, took his turn

Mrs. Vandendool then
brought her Grade 4s to the

themselves. Then sitting in a
circle they began voicing
thcir concerns about what
next year in Seaforth will
hold for them. Some said
they heard that they have
great teachers there, and that

Cardno's Hall
full for meeting
CONTINUED from page 4
Publicity in Leslie Frost's
cabinet.
While extolling the many
virtues of Premier George
Drew and the two-year-old
Tory govemment, he stopped
suddenly, right in the middle
of a sentence. He had noticed
a friendly face in the back of
the hall. He raised his arm in
a wave and said, "I see my
old friend Jack Pethick in the
audience, and with a big
smile he added, "Glad to see
you, Jack."
And indeed Jack was at the
rear of the hall covering the
meeting for the Free Press.
None of the local people
knew or recognized him
standing at the back near the
door.
However...most of them did
know Seaforth's own Jack
Pethick was sitting in a row
about the centre of the hall.
He was somewhat of a char-
acter in town and was
slouched down with a week-
old beard and appeared to be
fast asleep.
Tom Pryde did win the by-
election. But the Tory sup-
porters who packed the hall
never did quite figure out
how the guest speaker knew
Jack Pethick - the fellow who
appeared to have passed out
in the middle of the audience.
Alzheimer to go up
Because of Canada's aging
population, the number of
seniors with dementia, of
which Alzheimer disease is
the most prevalent type, is
expected to triple in the first
third of the next century, to
778,000 by the year 2031,
according to Statistics
Canada.
Bear cub near door
A black bear cub gave Port
Elgin residents a bit of a thrill
June 13 when it was spotted
in a tree along the shoreline,
on Arthur Street, 10 -feet
from a local woman's front
door. The cub soon scurried
into a nearby park, then into a
bush at the end of a dead-end
street.
