History comes home to Huron
BY DAVID EMSLIE

Loaned history of the for-
mer CFB Clinton. which
went missing in Ottawa for
25 years. has once again
found a home in Huron
County.
Recently, the compiler of
the history. Edith Baker.
made a presentation of the
written and photographic his-
tory of the base from its
inception to closing to Phil
Malcolm. who is spearhead -
in the efforts to found a
museum in honor of the base
and the people who trained
there.
Malcolm. commenting on
the found history, noted.
"Something good came out
of the Somalia affair,"
explaining that the search for
records relating to that affair
eventually led to the base his-
tory finally being rediscov-
ered.
Baker worked on the base
as secretary to the
Commanding Officer (CO)
for 17 years. and for four of
those years, from 1967-71,
she worked on her own time
to compile the running histo-
ry of the base.
Now a Seaforth resident,
with a farm between Clinton
and Seaforth, Baker
explained that the task of
compiling the history began
on a smaller scale. as she was
working to put together an
album for the base's first CO,
Group Captain Adrian Cocks.
• She noted, however, that
word of this supposedly
small album spread. and let -

ters started to arrive from
around the world. "I thought
it would be a shame not to
make use of this informa-
tion," she stated, and thus
began four years of history
collection.
With the base set for clo-
sure on Sept. 11971, Baker
put in her last day there on
Aug. 26.1971, and on her
final day, she said, "1 wrote
the closing paragraph to the
story."
The decision was made to
ship the photo albums and
written history to Ottawa to
Nation Defense Headquarters
for "safekeeping" I3aker stat-
ed. where they could be used
by historians and by people
writing%istories of the air
force. From that time in
1971, until a few weeks ago.
Baker did not see her work
again.
A letter discovered when
the history was discovered
recently showed that the
books were really just on
loan for a two year period.
The letter from Baker stated.
in part , "1t is my wish that
after ample opportunity -
probably two years - to view
these photos at CFHQ and if
there should be no further
word of building a RCAF
Memorial that the album
marked RCAF Memorial be
returned to the Huron County
Museum at Goderich."

"The Ontario Works Act
rectums the welfare system 10
its original purpose, a Wiwi -
[lanai program of last mart
that provides people on wel-
fare with a stepping stone
back into the workforce,"
Ontario cabinet member
Janet Ecker, responsible for
the social services ministry,
said when the welfare reform
legislation was recently intro-
duced.
"As a government, we owe
to people on social assistance
to provide them with oppor-
tunities to help them become
self sufficient. Equally, we
owe it to taxpayers to ensure
that their dollars are going to
help people truly in need.
"We have heard from par-
ticipants that Ontario Works
is helping them develop
skills, make contacts with
potential employers, and give
back to their communities,"
Ecker. originally from Exeter.
stated.
The act "would provide the
legislative framework to
complete the implementation
of the mandatory Ontario
Works program by allowing
for •the participation of sole
support parents with children
in school. It would firmly
establish workfare as pari of
the welfare system," she said.
