Global adventutes continue for Kelly
BY DAVIDsCt7IT
Expositor Editor
When we left globe-trotting
Dave Kelly in last week's
edition he was eolebrating St.
Patrick's Day in Dublin,
Ireland wittrhisfamily.
Front there, ire and his sis-
ter -S aron ventured w
Stratford -Upon -Avon and
took the ferry to Wales. They
rented a car and drove to
London. England whore they
saw Big Ben, Buckingham
Palace and London Bridge.
"1 took a lot of pictures of
bridges." says Dave, a civil
engineer.
Then it was off to
. Amsterdam where there are
more bikes than people.
"Everyone has two or three
bikes each. Bicycles have
their own lanes and traffic
lights."
Flower Auction
Kelly met up with a back-
packing fnend there, a flower
farmer, and attended a flog
auction. "They're held from 6
• a.m. to "12 noon and S6 mil-
lion worth of Blowers are sold
a.day-. They're transported
within 24 hours all over the
world." It's. long hours for the
flower fanners who work 17 -
hour days for three months -of
the summer. Dave met the
flower grower during his
winter vacation time m New
Zealand.
After visiting the famous
Anne Frank. house in
Amsterdam, the next stop
was Paris, France where
Kelly celebrated his birthday.
He saw the_Mona-Lisa and
visited the Eiffel Tower.
Bullfight in Spain
The Dublin -area man wit-
nessed a bullfight firsthand in
Barcelona. Spain. "Six mata-
dors fought that day. They -go
until the bull is dead." He
explained the order in which
they stab the bull with spears
on horseback, then six sharp-
ened sticks and finall a knife
in the back of the deck. At
the end it's just one-on-one
with the matador and bull..
Kelly was fortunate he
.missed the match the day
before when the bull gouged
out part of the matador's
face.
He :saw Spanish flamenco
dancers and. his sister Sharon
joined in the dances held
after Mass every Sunday in
• Spain: •
• They stayed ata friend's
apartment there. When hang-

balcony to dry like every-
body does, some dropped to
the apartment below. "We got
out the fishing line and
hooked our cloths."
In Switzerland, Kelly
climbed yet another moun-
tain in in world-wide trek. "11
was two hours to the top,
1000 metres."
He stayed with friends
again inItaly where he was
treated to a home -cooked
seven -course Italian meal.
"1 got to see the real culture
and how they live."
Dave and Sharon saw the
ancient coliseum in Rome
where gladiators fought.
They also got to see the Pope
at the Vatican. "He did the.
Rosary live on radio." Then
they visited the famous
Leaning Tower of Pisa which
has been closed to visitors
the.pastsix years because it
is leaning too much. "They
have lead weights on the
opposite side."
They visited the beautiful
city of Venice where no cars
are allowed. "Cars are parked
at the edge of the city."
Everything is moved.by boat,
including people. -food and
supplies.
Almost Robbed
From Rome the two-Kellys
travelled to Greece. They had
a scary encounter on,their
nighttime train ride when
they. were almost robbed. A
thief entered their cabin and
grabbed Sharon's money belt.
Before he could remove it,
Dave helped his sister fight
off the man and he fled. "I
couldn't sleep for the rest of
the night." said Dave.
They wok in the beauti fu l
. mountains and sea by renting
scooters to travel on: On -the
top of one mountain they
could hear gunfire .in
Albania.
On their next stop in
Germany, they visited a beer
hall where Hitler gave•his last
speech. The Kellys also
viewed a concentration camp
where 200,000 prisoners
went to the gas chambers in
eight years. "I learned a lot
about history."'
The next destination was
Prague; then to Austria where
Kelly met yup with: two
Austrian women he met in
Hong Kong who arc ski
instructors. They lived in a
huge mountaintop home with
a magnificent view. "All the
homes are wooden with big
balconies."
He Ieamed a lot of skiing
skills and got a chance to try
some of the best runs in the
world. On the last run of the
day, skiers stop half -way
down the mountain and have
.a party at a -lodge. Kelly visit-
ed Salsburg where the movie
"Sound of Music" was
filmed.
Sharon Kelly returned to
Ireland and Dave travelled
the last leg of his trip alone.
The next stop was Berlin, a
famous city undergoing

intensive rebuilding since the
Berlin Wall was torn down
several years ago. -
"The East is trying to catch
up. It's a civil engineer's
nightmare or dream." He said
you can now walk in the very
-place the wall stood from the
end of World War 11 when the
city was divided.
He was then off w
Copenhagen. Denmark where
there's cobblestone streets
and BMWs fur taxis. Then he
went to Norway where the
world ski jumping champi-
onships were being held.
"They travel at 120 kmlhr
and go off a 120 metre
jump." He saw the Olympic
flame in Lillehammer where
,oast %pier Olympic games
were held.
One of his favourite experi-
ences of his trip was telemark
skiing with .dogs. He met a
skier with two German hunt-
ing dogs. A harness is
attached to the dog, which
helps pull the skier (using
cross-country skiis) up 1,000
metres to the -top of the
mountain. "It took three
hours to get to the top." It
was a little tricky maneouver-
ing down the slope without
downhill skiis.
Kelly finished up the six-
month trip with a three-day
trip to London, England
where he visited friends.
He kept a journal of all his
adventures in the six months.
He sent home postcards to
his parents of all 23 countries
