In Tokyo you get parking space, then car larlimughlahOLL Split the bill at the end of the 'there aren't many chairs in Japan. "You sit on the floor, sleep on the floor. You roll out a bed every night (a titin futon -like mat). And shoos are always off at the door." Driving is a real luxury in Tokyo. You have to buy a parking space before you buy a car. And it's almost the same amount of money for the parking spot, as it is for the car:' Because of the cost of dri- ving and limited amount of space, most people bike. There's not much room for cemeteries because of lack of space so most people are cre- mated when they die. When someone gets a cold or a minor illness and still wants to go out and go to work, they wear a mask over their mouth to prevent the spread of germs. GOLF BIG LUXURY "To golf in Japan is VERY prestigious. There's no land for courses over there. They will fly to another country to play. They pay $4.000 for a round of golf, and a yearly membership is S100,000." Japanese golfers always wear gloves when they play, and will have white hands from golfing in the sun with their gloves un. "The young guys will sun- tan with golf gloves on so the girls will think they have money," says Kelly. Favourite Country 1. New Zealand 2. Austria 3. Norway He took pictures of Canada with him on his trip. "1 showed people a picture of my farm and they couldn't believe I owned it at my age and how much space there was." he said. Only one per cent of the population in Japan is for- eign. And of that one per cent. half are Korean. So he definitely "stuck out" in a • crowd. "School kids wanted their picture taken with me. They're very shy people. so it was a big thing asking for a picture." HONG KONG As referred to in more detail in an accompanying story. Hong Kong is "a civil engineer's dream." says Kelly. Here and in other countries. he was able to see actual buildings he tested as models at UWO's wind tun- nel in London. The division of wealth is very apparent in here and many wealthy families have live-in maids from Thailand. Hottest Day 1. 39` C - Perth. Australia 2. 36° C - Jakarta. Indonesia 3. 34` C - Darwin, Australia "The Thai girls come over as maids fur the upper class families. They (Thai girls) all meet every Sunday in one spot. They buy gifts to send home to their families, as well as money." DOWN UNDER Kelly was able to see Ayers Rock and take pictures of it but•he wasn't able to climb it. "The week before i gut there a Japanese tourist guide fell off the rock and was killed so they weren't letting any- body." He saw the Olgas rock for- mation and rented a car with other backpackers and drove through the outback. "We saw wild camels and horses. We drove three hours and only met seven cars. We were in the middle of nowhere." Because there isn't a rail- way system in Australia, they have gigantic transport trucks called "road trains" that are tractor trailers with about six large trailers on behind. 'They've got 110 tires and are 150 -feet long. You know when you pass one on the road" To make things even more frightening for drivers, there are no speed limits and "no rules basically." Kelly spent some time in Kaktt National Park which KELLY 'DOWN UNDER' is about the same size as Holland. "We spent three days in it." He saw many nat- ural wonders there including 10 -foot high termite moun- tains which were "hard as rock." He saw a park workers feed chickens to a crocodile using a long pole. On one of their treks through the park, their guide got their land rover stuck in an alligator -filled river while crossing it. "We were stuck in the water for one hour." They were on the lookout for crocodiles, which will go after humans, while their guide freed the truck. Luckily none of the beasts showed up. Kelly also managed to fit in some horseback riding along the ocean beach and scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef. "1 was busy. I never stopped the whole time." He travelled to Fraser Island with other people he met at a hostel. "It was an all - sand island. There were sand dunes everywhere. 1 went barefoot for three days. We Best Experience 1) Jackaroo Course - Australia 2) Oungy jumping - New Zealand 3) Telemark Skiing with the dogs - Norway went long -jumping off hills. You could go 50 feet and wouldn't hurt yourself because it was all sand. There was a fresh -water lake, Lake McKenzie. in the middle of the island. You had to be aware of the wild Dingo dogs which would steal food and eat leather - iseieding Atm and waHats, said !copy. Re stayed at hostels in Australis and Now Zealand. He pleased to do this ora his .entire trip but mot so many people from Europe when he was in Ausuaha that whoa it came w the Europe log d the trip, he was able to call up petyle from Austria, Italy, etc. to show him the local c-■-- ---i ar pate .
