The go-ahead was given
for slightly more sidewalk
work than this, on both sides
of Goderich Street West,
from West William to Adam,
and on Goderich Street East
from East William to at least
the apartments opposite the
end of Coleman Street, and
further depending on whatev-
er funds remain.
Works superintendent
Forest said there are hunks of
sidewalk that are OK within
the reconstruction, but con-
tractors sometimes resist sav-
ing portions that require them
to chop up their forms.
He said he doesn't know
exactly how much sidewalk
can be saved in the approved
reconstruction, but this
might cover the extra 300 or
so metres without requiring
more money.
He said the sidewalks being
done bear a lot of foot traffic.
Council discussed consoli-
dating reserve funds to per-
haps pay for any extra, and
similar projects, because it
feels work sometimes needs
to be done„ when the time is
npe.
Councillors .felt the idea
had merit, and should be pur-
sued and refined at future
meetings.
FOUND FUNDS
In, connection with road
construction, Forest reported
the Works department "has
finished building the road at
the end of Duke Street at
Progressive Turf. Levis
Contracting started construc-
tion on May 27 (approved
last month when the budget
was passed) on John Street
and' work is progressing
well."
He added:
"When the work was ten-
dered it was based on a dollar
figure for budget reasons.
The tenders were way below
the estimated figure so we
have priced out the last block
of John Street and have found
it will cost approximately
S40,000 to complete the
street this year.
In his report to council,
Forrest specified the items in
1997 road and sewers, with
budgeted figures against
actual tenders (bracketed):
Railway Street extension,
$8,000 ($8,620); John Street
reconstruction, $103,500
($88,592); sanitary sewer
ower than expected
reconstruction $60,000
($21,630); engineering,
$13,380 (the same); and,
John Street to Spading, not
budgeted for (39,655). The
tendered total is $171,877,
still less than -the $184,880
originally budgeted.
store on Seaforth's Main
Street until a few years ago.
Pete says he got the idea for
a bicycle shop in Florida,
where there arc so many of
them, and they spend their
winters. When thought turned
to deed - they bought out a
bicycle shop in West Lorne
and moved the business to
Seaforth, in the building they
already owned (it belonged to
his father and 'used to be a
lumber yard).
The Seaforth Bike Shop is
open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
Tuesday through Saturday,
from April to September.
It is on Railway opposite
the north end of Jarvis Street
South, near the railway
tracks.
