HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1997-06-04, Page 6Janmaat streaks to victory
Rob Janmaat won the race
of his lite Friday.
The 15 -year-old from
Egmondville wort the midget
boys' 100 -metre hurdles at
the WOSSA track and field
championships at Brantford
in a time of 14.83, somewhat
surprizing because he ran a
taster time (14.7)4 week ago
at the WOSSA regionals and
finished third.
But he'll take it.
Janmaat, who runs for
Clinton St. Anne's, says a
good start helped but he feels
he grabbed the edge on the
last three hurdles, when he
passed two runners in front of
him.
He won the Huron -Perth
Conference crown a couple
of weeks ago.
This is his first year hur-
dling. He took it up in
January. Coach Carolyn
Cook says he's "incredibly
coachable, gives 100 per cent
and 'really listens."
He trains every weekday,
and Saturdays.
OFSSA FINALISTS
Janmaat's burst of speed
qualified him for the upvom-
ing Ontario finals, and was
only one of many highlights
for area athletes at the two-
day WOSSA meet.
On Saturday Rob finished
10th in the straight 100 -metre
dash.
Kim Devereaux, 14, also
running for St. Anne's and
from Egmondville, has

Girls hockey
keeps
growing
Hockey for girls is re-
emerging in Mitchell after
about a 20 -year absence.
More than 30 girls have
registered for hockey in
Mitchell for next winter.
Officials expect that's enough
to organize tyke, peewee and
midget teams.
In 1990-91 there were 325
women's hockey teams in
Ontario. Last season there
were 853 teams and more
than 12,000 female players.
Seaforth had its first
women's team in many years
last season. It competed at
the intermediate level.
