• A True Story
.DY EMILY,SiCOTT
They:say life begets at 40,
but that wasn't the case for
me. The summer that! turned
40 and went for my yearly
physical, my family doctor
informed me that we would
,have to talk about hormone
replacement soon. 1 didn't
say a word but thought to
-myself (if,you think you're
getting •rpe on hormones,
you're crazy). Little did I
know .she wasn't far off. A'
.year or so later (October
1991), the bot flashes started
along with, mood swings,
memory loss. iatique. joint
pain. vaginal dryness, loses of
libido, anxiety. insomnia,
achy legs. unexplained pain
• that' travelled around my
body, feelings of boiling
water going. through my
head, etc. etc. I was only 41.
I .spent most of December
on the couch with a headache
and sore throat. 1 thought I
had the flu, These arc also
symptoms of menopause. I
couldn't get the least hit
excited about Christlnas. Uy
January i was crying for no
reason. 1 would read the
newspaper and if something
sad had been reported I
would cry. 1 didn't even
know the people involved. I
would watch the news at
noon and start to .cry for no
reason. 1 thought I was crack-
ing up.
In February 1992. I saw my
family doctor and told her 1
hadn't been feeling. well for a
few months. She gave me a
funny look and started asking
questions. Several minutes
later .she announced that she
thought I was menopausal. 1
almost fell off the chair. She
sent me. home with a pam-
phlet to read and a tape for
my husband and me to.iisten
to. We weren't low enthused
about hormone replacement
therapy as i had. two aunts
who had died of breast can-
. car. My mother had refused
to take hormones and .she got
through menopause.
:However, I aln,not my moth-
er. -My .symptom,s were so
severe that I.ihought 1 was
dying.
' One .night i ,ahogk so
severely in bed that 1 awak-
ened my husband. ;The whole
bed sbugk. Ue asked We avbet
was wrong and.' said! didn.'t
.know. but l surc,felt weird.,I
thought I was. having a sUij e
Qr,heart attack. UUe•.hekd •ape
and eventually the shaking
s1u pest:He fell back teak"
but 1 lay awake praying that 1
would still be alive the next
muming. We had two teenage
sons (they are 20 and 21
nowt sea 1 wasn't too.keen un
dying just then.
DEPRESSION
Next came the depression.
By March I could hardly get
out of bed or off the couch. -
Finally I gave in to. hormone
replacement. t decided that
my quality of life was impor-
tant and that if I had twenty
good years it was beuer than
what -I was going through.
The first year I had to take
only estrogen. The hot flash-
.
es subsided and most of the
other symptoms except the
anxiety. '1 had to take Xanax,
a mild tranquilizer, to help
one sleep and get through the
day. Then -my periods quit
and I had to take proges-
terone to have a period. if
,you ate taking estrogen and
you have your uterus you
must take progesterone.
My body didn't like proges-
terone at all. It upset my
stomach, bowel. caused joint
pain, made me more
depressed. even suicidal..1
tried cutting a 2.5 mg in half.
Even that much bothered inc.
i -begged my family doctor
a year ago (April. 1996).
please can ,1 have my ; uterus
removed. She .said no doctor
would do it for those reasons.
1 almost cried all the way
home. Being suicidal is not
enough uf.a reason? My new
family doctor disagrees with
her.
WHAT A MESS!
During the winter of 1993 1
realized i had SADS
(Seasonal Affective Disorder
Syndrome) as well as being
menopausal. 1 diagnosed this
myself after reading several
articles about it. What a mess
1 was ! I felt fine from May
or June until thc end of
September but then ,1 would
crash. Then came the anti-
depressants..1 have tried,tivc
or six over the years but the
only one that got ins func-
tioning was ,Prozac, and it
made Me se/wally dysfunc-
tional. This,didrottt.*Jae me

Some women call proges-
terone the ugly pill. 1 call it
the suicide pill.
1 happened to be in our
pharmacy after my period
started and was feeling much
better. but commented to our
female pharmacist what a bad
-week -I had oat the proges-
terone. She commented that
site had something I .should
try and showed me a bout of
Remifemin an the vitamin
shelf. You don't need a pre-
scription. Remifemin is
derived from a natural plant
extract. Women in Germany
have been using this:product
for. 40 years. Native
American women boiled the
root of this plant. the Black
Cohosh plant, and drank the
tea. They called it "swum -
root". This was in the 1800s.
Remifemin is _impel, far
-menopause and premensrual
stress. It is especially good
for depression. (:bought some
immediately. It is not covered -
under our drug plan but who
cares - IT WORKS! My

-Boston. the!Reverend,Chailes
F. Smith somehow gut hold
of the sung book and in -hum-
ming over some of the tunes
was struck by the melody of
one and thought it appropri-
ate for a national air. "He drat
down and put words to it and
called it. "My Country 'Tis
Of Thee."
The first time "God Save
the King" was sung as .'•My
Country 'Tis. of Thee" was on
the 4th of July in 1882 in
Boston at a-service-atPark
Street :Baptist Church.
Needless to say it made the
author, the Reverend ,Charles
Smith quite famous. He had
no .ideu the tune was the
national anthem of Britain
and the empire...,and most
Americans still don't know.
Indeed. many think the
British stole it from them.
